biggest gap between games......

i wasn't sure how to word it, so apologies if wrong

i'm talking about 1 club

tony mcguiness played for glenelg 1985 (grand final)

his next game for glenelg was in 1999 (i think)

a gap of 14 years

i recall reading about a port player in the 1930's or 1940's who made a comeback at about 47 years of age.............i'd presume the war may've had something to do with it

so who else has had big gaps between games for whatever reason ???

John McInnes

Debut: 1st Semi Final, 8 September 1956.
2nd game: Round 1, 4 April 1970.

Unlike Tony McGuinness, John played no senior football in the interim.

Bayman, the Port player you are referring to is Shine Hosking. He sat on the bench for one game, aged 48.

Ben Hart played a Foundation Cup game for North in March 1992, he next played for North in April 2007 a gap of 15 years. Unlike John McInnes he did play a fair bit of football in between.

Actually when did John McInnes resume as a seconds player?

Also was Shine Hosking at Port or Torrens when he sat on the fence at 48 years of age? He of course was known as a Port player, but I believe he coached Torrens.

I know it's your club bayman, but it couldn't have been as late as 1999 as McGuinness was non-playing coach from 1998-2000. So it could've been '97. How many games did he play? I'd always thought he'd given up playing after the Blight axe.

Shine Hosking sat on the Port bench (rather than the fence :) ) in 1930. Being known for that has probably obscured his exceptional coaching record. In a wonderful numerical sequence he coached Port for 5 years (27-31), then Torrens for 4 (32-35), back to Port for 3 (36-38), then messed it up by going back to Torrens for just one year (39). The eight years at Port yielded 3 flags from 6 GFs (they were 3rd the other two years). He coached Torrens to the '33 premiership but they didn't play in the GF again until Shine went back there in '39.

Shine Hosking sat on the Port bench (rather than the fence :) ) in 1930 .

In those days it was always referred to as "sitting on the fence" if you were a reserve.

He returned to Norwood in 1967 intending to play league football again, but managed 2 Reserves games before getting injured so he retired. Then in 1968 he was appointed non-playing Reserves Coach and late in the season added a further 6 spasmodic games late in the season because he felt he could get his message across better by coaching players on the field.

The following year he played and won the Reserves Magarey Medal. As he was a class above Reserves, and because Robert Oatey needed experience in the league team, he won his spot in round 1, 1970.

John Platten would have had a fair gap between games for Centrals. 1985 to 1998?

Baggy8, Bayman is correct that McGuinness did play one game when coaching. Glenelg people will be better placed on the specifics, but he didn't tell the players he was planning on playing a game until he started getting changed with them before the match. I'm not sure he played the full game, but I do remember this incident.

The players didn't get suspicious when he read his name out in the team lineup on the Thursday night? :D

So he came out of a retirement of at least three years and played a game without telling anybody. Gee, I bet that put the wind up the opposition. Great player but ....

Round 12 1998 was the match in which McGuinness played. Previous last match as stated was the 1985 Grand Final.
John Platten as FlyingHigh said; last match was Round 22 1985, next match was Round 1 1998.
Ben Hart played his last premiership match for North in Round 20 1991; followed by Round 1 2007.
Nigel Smart played for South in the 1st Semi Final of 1990; next match was Round 4 2004.

Maybe another thing to look at is the largest gap between matches, but each match was for a different team. For example:
Luke Spehr played for North in Round 3 1998; then next appeared in a SANFL league match for Eagles in Round 8 2004.
Shane Schubert played one match for West in Round 23 2000; then returned for North in Round 1 2006.

However Stephen Doyle goes better than those two:

Last game for South was Round 23 1999; first game for Norwood was Round 1 2008.
Nathan Eagleton will trump that when he first strips for Norwood - he played 8 matches for West, the last was Round 8 1999.

Based on this Spelly, what about Mark Jones - Not sure when he last played for Norwood but played for the Dogs in the very late 90's from memory? Do you have his info?

Mark Jones' last league game for Norwood was against Port Adelaide at Alberton, 1st May 1993.

the reason freddy played that day was because an afl player got pulled out of the named glenelg team & he replaced that player (no idea who it was now), so freddy decided to play to see first hand what the problem was, whether it was the lack of talk, work rate etc etc

Thanks AH - Not sure exactly when, but I think Mark Jones made his league debut for Central early in season 1998?

Spelly can you confirm this?
