Ok, Brucetiki, Kookas and myself are at loggerheads as to the origins of the chimney.

I was of the opinion that it started in 1954, when West End decided that the Grand Finalists of that year would be made the colours of the new logo and their colours painted on the chimney.

Kookas thought it had something to do with a bet that Fos Williams made.

Brucetiki believed it was that is was because someone at West end was so convinced that Westies would win the flag that year that if they did (being in Westies territory) that Westies colours only would be painted on the chimney.

Soooooooooooo, who's correct?

note: I sit between Bruce and Kookas at work - you can cut the tension with a knife here today and I've had to stop Kookas from defacing Bruces poster on several occasions today ;)

You all have parts of it right....and maybe a bit wrong.

An employee suggested it....as it is in Wests territory.
The Boss agreed...If West Won.
Fos williams then entered and said if we win can we paint it Black and white.
The boss agreed to that

Port Won...It was painted White on top of Black and Williams asked if he could put Red under the Black to reward West for a fighting effort.

My sister said Chimley for years. and Father Christmas still knew what she meant.
You would think there was a few kids at Hahndorf who couldn't pronounce every word Correctly.
Even Max has a few problems with Glenelg.

CHIMNEY CEREMONY

The "Brewery Chimney" tradition began in 1954 when an employee suggested that due to the fact the Brewery was in West Adelaide's territory, the chimney should be painted in the team's colours of red and black.

The then Managing Director of SA Brewing agreed - providing West Adelaide went to the top of the premiership ladder that year.

Fos Williams, then Port Adelaide captain and coach, said his team had no intention of letting West Adelaide win the premiership - and would he consider painting Port's colours on the chimney if Port won. It was agreed.

The Advertiser talked about 1954 this morning - did they source Wiki??... but I was always of the understanding that the chimney was first painted when West Adelaide won the flag in 1947.

minor history, The chimney was painted red and black in 1911 after West Adelaide won the flag and West End chose their brewery colours. Red and Black and in 1954 Port had decided to end West Adelaide colours on top and history was made.

Knowing the 'tiser, they probably sourced This August Forum.

As a matter of interest, there appears to be a small band of silver separating the doggy tricolours from the double blues on this year's chimney paint job. What's up with that?

yep, the ultimate example of male logic.

The year North were runner up they had the red of the dogs on the bottom which blended with the red of the roosters so much so that they had to repaint the bloody thing so you could tell north from Central.

This year, they put the bloody blue on the bottom which blends in with the blue of the blues!

It's not rocket science people!

Well, it's a little bit of rocket science. The 'bloody blue' is on the bottom at the request of the CDFC to acknowledge that the colours of the club are red, white and blue rather than blue, white and red.

Let's face it, it really doesn't matter, they could be white blue and bloody red for all anyone cares, they're all still the same colours at the end of the day, aren't they? :?

I care, Central are the red, white and blue. As in beware the Dogs are coming "red, white and blue" or In the club song 'this time' .... "It makes you proud to hear the crowd, in the red, white and blue"

Port Adelaide beat West Adelaide in a thrilling 1954 Grand Final. It was Fos Williams who, after helping to stir the white paint, suggested that a red stripe be added to the chimney to symbolise West's gallant fight.

Ever since, the colours of both the winners and the runners-up have adorned the chimney each year.
