Apologies, haven't read all the posts but has anyone mentioned Handbag?? He would make the list under a number of categories...

A question for Spelly... Is Peter Beythein the record holder for most league games without ever playing State footy?

I met him at Mt Gunson near Woomera in 1984 when he came up for a promotional visit. We were the Redlegs too and we had quite a few jars that night. He enjoyed my accolades and constant bowing to him

I also played against him when he played for Greenacres in the late '80s'- he'd changed a tad. I didn't recognise him for 3 quarters even though I was full back and he was in a pocket

more info? I'm presuming you're saying he's added about 40kgs??? I haven't seen him I reckon since the 82 GF, but he was on the secondary line of heroes as a kid with Wynne, Armour, Button after the first-choice stars of Woodcock, Aish, McIntosh, Thomas etc.
Only once I got older I realised what an effort it was for him to just play after the first knee in 76 or whenever it was
Roger Woodcock -- 602 goals from a forward flank makes you a legend.

I've mentioned my admiration before..........in the favourite rovers string.

He cut Bob Tardiff down from 6'6" (?) to 1 foot with one punch. One of the gutsiest players I ever saw. His knee was completely #@%êd by the end of his SANFL career

He'd aged a lot when I saw him playing for Greenies. I had a beer with him after the game which I will always remember - a true NFC hero

I'm not sure where he fits in but:

Tony Giles

Courageous
Hard as nails
All Australian
5(?) premierships
Good bloke
Crap Coach - PAOCFC (He's going to kill me for that)

Came up with some of the best coaching comments I've ever heard (eg)

First round 1976 against North Adelaide at the Parade. It turned out to be a blessing for Norwood as when he was finally able to play regular footy (on one leg) from about 1980, he gave us 3-4 great seasons. His courage was unbelievable.

Had he not injured his knee, he would have been snapped up by the VFL (I think I recall stories Carlton were already chasing him) and he would have been as sensational as John Platten.

As for now, all I will say is he has had his share of health problems. I'll leave it at that.

As in, Norwood!

Had a mate broke his hand in a carpark blue, but from memory I think he hit someone named Ash Phalt.

Wasn't there supposed to be a blue once upon a time (not sure if it ever took place) between Bruce Light and fabulous Phil?

May stand corrected, but I think its John Seebohm.

I don't have any information on Brian Cunningham's son. I'm wondering of he was thinking of Jon Cunningham who played in our 1997 premiership team. His father was Jack Cunningham, a rover in Hawthorn's 1961 premiership team.

I do know that Brian Cunningham once considered an offer to join Norwood after leaving Port, but he stayed retired.

AH - was referring to Tony Giles.

But as Lachie points out, his son Lachie plays for Sturt.

On further thought, reakon I had my Tony's mixed-up.

Think it was Tony Hobby's son who went to Norwood...

Yeah Mick definitely played for us ... I actually rated him, very honest football who didn't shirk the body, very un-Norwood like.

IIRC Tony Giles did an ACL in his last game ... played the 1st half with the injury and didn't realise the extent until he cooled down at half time.

Must be a Port thing ... somehow (one of my least favourite players) George Fiacchi played the latter part of his career with an ACL injury and didn't get it operated on. I've done an ACL myself and I still don't know how he did it.
