I 'm not sure on which basis we are rating them ... SANFL careers? Overall careers? Natural ability? Height? :)

I'll throw it all in and have a go:

1 John Platten
2 Stephen Kernahan
3 Craig Bradley
4 Mchael Aish
5 Andrew Jarman
6 Peter Motley
7 Garry McIntosh
8 Tony McGuinness
9 Greg Anderson
10 Grantley Fielke

** Peter Motley would have been higher but for his tragically truncated career.

Its an interesting selection of players. Presumably its a selection of players who made their mark in the early 80's, or is it just a random selection of elite SANFL players from the 80's?

Would someone like to give more detail on Peter Motley's career.

I saw him play and while he was a very good player, his career was tragically cut short and I wonder whether his rating in that group might be a bit high.

I'm not saying it's wrong, but I'd like more detail.

Peter Motley was a gun, pure and simple.

Played 92 games for Sturt and won 2 B & F's, all Australian in 85 and also made Sturts Team of the Centry on the wing.
Went to Carlton in 86 where he played 19 games including the 86 GF. The accident happened in 87 after the Blues lost to
Sydney by 7 points at the SCG.

The accident ended his career. Des English played in the back pocket of the 86 GF, and was diagnosed with Lukemia shortly after the
GF. He wouldn't play again.

Carlton used his illness to spur themselves on to the 87 flag, and after Mott's accident it gave them further reason too.

Both players were the first to see and hold the cup after the presentation and if my memory serves me correct Braddles gave his
premiership medal to Motts.

I have been to a couple of Carlton functions including Craig Bradley's testimonial, where Motts spoke, and the standing ovation he
got was an absolute indication of where he stood at the Blues.

Some greats of Carlton including Doull, Nicolls, Kernahan & Braddles all said if Motts didn't have his accident then his presence
on the field and Football nous would have won Carlton a couple of more premierships in that era. A fair rap one would of thought.

A Carlton & Sturt legend with out a doubt.

I'll rank these lot twice, with different definitions, as I see them:

Best Career

1. S Kernahan
2. J Platten
3. C Bradley
4. T McGuiness
5. Anderson
6. Jarman
7. McIntosh
8. Fielke
9. Aish
10. Motley

Can't not include their VFL/AFL Careers aswell.

Natural Ability

1. Platten
2. Kernahan
3. Bradley
4. Aish
5. Motley
6. McGuiness
7. Jarman
8. Anderson
9. McIntosh
10. Fielke

Value to team

1. Kernahan
2. Bradley
3. Jarman
4. Platten
5. McGuiness
6. McIntosh
7. Aish
8. Motley
9. Anderson
10. Fielke

As always all subjective ... Different positions, different styles, different pysical attributes.

Lot of good players from the same era would usurp some of these (McDermott, Hall, Naley etc)

1. Kernahan
2. McIntosh
3. Motley
4. Platten
5. Bradley
6. McGuinness
7. Jarman
8. Aish
9. Anderson
10. Fielke

Kernahan picks himself for me ... he's the only forward and no other player won as many games off his own boot as he did.
McIntosh at two is controversial because he never played VFL /AFL but I don't care. He would have killed it in that comp week after week if he went. He doesn't have to prove anything as a footballer. Motley is difficult to rate because of his shortened career. But I believe he was that good.

I liked CP's approach with a couple of different criteria. So here goes
Who I liked watching (always important) but only the first five really matter to me in this list.
1 - Motley
2 - McIntosh
3 - Platten
4 - Kernahan (except v Norwood)
5- Aish
6 - Bradley
7 - McGuinness
8 - Jarman
9 - Anderson
10 - Fielke

SANFL career (weighting what they did in the time available to them)
1 - McIntosh. I'm biased but he got two flags when the comp was very strong, longevity, won all the awards he could, and scared people.
2 - Kernahan. Just gets Bradley on the basis he's a big guy. Three b and fs, flag etc, the player in his team from about the time he was 19.
3 - Bradley. Three b and fs, flag early etc etc
4 - Platten. Probably judged harshly v Bradley, due to lack of quality teammates and not the chance to star in many big finals.
5 - Motley. Should have got a flag somewhere, but not his fault he didn't.
6 - Aish. Longevity, albeit that his finals performances were often a yo yo. Carried a lot of injuries.
7 - Jarman. Contributed more in September in my view than McGuiness.
8 - McGuinness.
9 - Anderson - started wonderfully and then never matched the heights IMO. Maybe he got too big and lost the absolute pace that really stood him out early.
10 - Fielke. I just never saw the attraction, apart from longevity.

If I was picking in the schoolyard, and wanted to beat the opposition.
1 - Kernahan. Always the big guy who can kick goals.
2 - Motley. Can play multiple positions.
3 - Platten. Elite goalkicker pre VFL, where he didn't need to kick them with Dunstall, Brereton etc, but still contributed solidly.
4 - McIntosh. The hard ege.
5 - Bradley.
6 - Aish (if it was 1979-81, not any time afterwards)
7 - McGuinness. Did more in the higher level than Jarman, albeit went much earlier
8 - Jarman
9 - Anderson
10 - Fielke

Instinctive response

1. G McIntosh
2. S Kernahan
3. P Motley
4. C Bradley
5. J Platten
6. M Aish
7. G Fielke
8. A Jarman
9. A McGuinness
10. G Anderson

Nos 7-10 were hardest as FWIW I think there is some gap between 1-6 and 7-10.

Agree. Reckon there's some serious daylight there, and a bit of daylight between 5 and 6, much as I love Michael Aish.
