Both Glenelg and Subiaco had a chance to beat Richmond in these matches, as the scores below suggest:
6/10/1973
Subiaco 5.5 6.7 13.9 16.14 (110)
Scottsdale 1.4 3.8 8.9 11.12 (78)
Richmond 4.4 14.7 16.11 19.16 (130)
Glenelg 5.8 7.8 12.13 16.19 (115)
Crowd: 34,104
Best: Richmond: Bartlett, Walsh, Sheedy, Roberts, Clay, McGhie
Glenelg: Colbey, Hamilton, Sandland, Carey, Millard, Marker
Scorers: Richmond: Bartlett 5.3, Balme, Hunt, Walsh 3.2, Sheedy 2.0, McKellar 1.1, Morris, Sproule 1.0, Wood, Carter, Rae 0.1, Rushed 0.3.
Glenelg: D.Phillis 3.1, Voigt 3.0, Sandland, Wickens, Hamilton 2.1, Caldwell, Carey 1.2, MacFarlane, Marriott 1.1, Cornes 0.2, Bennett, W.Phillis, Rosewarne 0.1, Rushed 0.4.
It's obvious where the game was won, but the amount of scoring shots was the same, so if only Glenelg could have kicked straighter in the first, that half time deficit of 41 points may not have been as large.
Two days later, after a spray from Kerley at quarter time, the Tigers went to town against the Magpies in the third place play off:
Glenelg 3.9 13.14 20.17 29.27 (201)
Scottsdale 3.4 4.6 10.7 10.8 (68)
Best: Glenelg: W.Phillis, Hamilton, Carey, Colbey, D.Phillis, Wickens
Scottsdale: Joniec, Wilson, Nicholls, Gillies, W.Burns, R.Hall
Scorers: Glenelg: Sandland 5.3, D.Phillis 4.5, Weston 4.1, Wickens 3.4, Hamilton 2.5, Carey 2.2, Voigt 2.1, Marriott 2.0, Caldwell 1.2, Rawson 1.1, Colbey, Osborn, Cornes 1.0, Millard 0.2, Schultz 0.1.
Scottsdale: Ranson 2.1, Hughes 2.0, R.Hall 1.2, Barrett, Nicholls, W.Burns 1.1, Wilson, Cuthbertson 1.0, D.Hall 0.1, Rushed 0.1.
In the final, Subiaco let a golden chance slip, having led by 33 points at quarter time. They kicked 2.12 in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, but Richmond fared not much better with 5.15.
Richmond 2.1 5.7 7.16 12.20 (92)
Subiaco 7.4 8.10 9.16 10.19 (79)
I'll need to get the scorers from the other two matches next time at the library, but not surprisingly the majority of the 9,491 fans that attended were in favour of the Lions.

What league did/do Scottsdale play in?

They were the Tasmanian Statewide Champions of 1973. They play in the NTFA now, I think.

There were only 4 games. They would play 2 games on the Saturday, and then the 2 winners would play for the title on the Monday, the losers would play for 3rd and 4th.
edit: Sorry spelly, I misread what you wrote. I though you were saying there were two extra matches

I don't think inaccurate kicking by Glenelg was the key in the Richmond/Glenelg game. Scores don't show what was happening in that second quarter. Kevin Sheedy went the niggle/knuckle and took Glenelg's' minds right off football, for long enough for Richmond to get well clear.
Also in that match I remember Steve Hywood being tackled and shooting a handball out in response to a call from a voice he knew - problem it was to one of his 1972 teammates, not his 1973 teammates

Also, in the 2nd qtr, Neil Balme and (I think) Craig McKellar kicked goals where they just threw the ball onto the boot, it floated way up in the air and then drifted through. I thought at least one, if not both goals were flukes.
Enjoyed the game though

I was at the Glenelg v Richmond game and my recollection was that Sheedy got a few players minds off the ball in that second quarter. Regarding a few stray handballs, didn't Glenelg change their jumper and the talk afterwards was that they had shot the occasional handball to the black and gold jumper..

Can anyone confirm the line-ups for Glenelg - I have the following from a friend but I think it has some errors.
I think there should be 22 players (one of my line-ups is a player short and I have a feeling there was a late change in one of the games not taken into account below - does anyone have the capacity to cross-reference?

Dean Schutz! Dean went on to play for Woodville (mostly Reserves) then became fitness guy and runner under Blighty. He then bobbed up as runner for Blighty at Geelong! Like a sandy haired Neil Craig with a moustache.

As an aside, Malone for Subiaco is Mick Malone, who played one test match for Australia in 1977 scoring about 48 and had match bowling figures of something like 6 for 72. He also played quite a deal of World Series Cricket

And I don't think that he had much trouble being convinced to play WSC, seeing as a teammate of his was a main negotiator of WSC contracts - Austin Robertson.

aahhh, i remember being at the adelaide oval for both days of that series as a young 10 yr old tiger cub, i can also recall sheedy and co going the knuckle, reckon marker and cornes might have been on the receiving endduring the 2nd qtr, and the stupid yellow/gold guernseys we wore - bloody atrocious, both sides should have worn their respective state colours i thought. the monday match against scottsdale saw paul weston make his senior debut at age 16, and yes nearly everyone went for subi that day, i followed richmond in the vfl up until they played dirty against us and hated their guts for the next few years. It was a pity we couldnt emulate north's feat of the previous year as a lot of non glenelg people believed the SA tigers to be the best team in oz that year, i didnt argue with them!
