Ok, now I understand this could be a very sensitive topic with some supporters, so I'll just point out that this is a legitimate question.

I just saw the incident again on video in which Granger broke Barratt's leg, an incident in which anyone I've ever spoken to had no doubt as to what Grangers intention was ... However I was wondering if you could make an argument for Granger attempting to soccer the ball, as he'd "fluffed" the possession and spilled the ball behind him?

Not saying this is the case, I just wouldn't have thought the footage was completely conclusive.

Its a game I've never seen save for a few highlights on teh Tigers of Old DVD, wouldn't mind a butchers at it myself...

As one at the game, and with a video, I reckon most supporters base their view on whether it was deliberate or not on the whole of his second half, which wasn't pretty reading.
Barratt, Cornes, Maynard etc etc

This from a Norwood man with no love for either club.

I wouldn't mind a copy of that match myself... Amongst many other matches, that will never get commercially marketed.

Sorry lads, it's only from The Way It Was 82 (I refused to watch BB with the missus on the main box), but more than happy to lend it around ... It's actually on DVD already.

Fair call there too Roger ... It was pretty evident in the 10 minutes of highlights from that game nearly all Port players came out looking to soften the Bays up right from the get go - Funny thing was when they actually started playing footy they started looking the more effective team.

Funny how the same matches keep getting brought up. My favourite is that game at the Parade the following year that we often get to talk about.
Anyway, the '82 Preliminary Final was the first league match I ever saw.
Something that doesn't often get mentioned about this game was that when the Magpies team came out after half time, they all bunched together in the center square, and then proceeded to rough each other up with hip and shoulders or whatever. Cahill later said that he wanted to intimidate the Tigers and fire up the Magpies a bit more.
The other was that when Granger came on from the bench for the first time that match, his opposite number (Cornes?) ran over to him and hit him. It doesn't show up too well on the replay because of the angle, but when Granger hit him back they were side to side, and the TV camera and photographers at the ground got great images of Granger knocking him off his feet.
Granger went nuts for the rest of the match, but I sort of felt it was wrong that he got blamed for that first hit when it was provoked.
On the football side, there was an overhead snap for a goal by Danny Hughes ( I hope I go the right player) from a pocket, beating two Glenelg players in the process to put the Magpies within a straight kick late in the final quarter.

Yep, shades of the Barry Hall/Brent Staker incident there ... I'll need to watch it again.

Perhaps the most infamous match in South Australian football history?

Electric atmosphere at Footy Park that day was. Though it felt like one spark could send the whole joint up in flames.

Only atmosphere I've encountered like it since was at a Millwall v Derby 2nd Div. match, The Old Den, 1987.

Was only eight at the time (1982) and thought finishing third was a pretty good year. At the time, I really didn't understand the devastation of the Port supporters on the deathly quiet bus on the way home.

Come to think of it - I still don't!

Except Studley got straight to his feet and held Granger to 1 kick for the match.
Staker did not get up.

I was at that match. Very eerie feeling throughout the whole stadium when Granger went near the ball.
My most vivid memory of the day was my mate being 'Brollied' by some grumpy old Port Boiler after the match. Laugh! I nearly Shat!
