82' Prelim Granger Incident

I just saw the incident again on video in which Granger broke Barratt's leg, an incident in which anyone I've ever spoken to had no doubt as to what Grangers intention was ... However I was wondering if you could make an argument for Granger attempting to soccer the ball, as he'd "fluffed" the possession and spilled the ball behind him?
Not saying this is the case, I just wouldn't have thought the footage was completely conclusive.
