a few years ago when gary ablett 'retired' from geelong, rumours were rife that he was close to signing with westies, so now enough time has passed for those in the know to tell us what did or did not happen

That is why he is asking the question, it was meantioned at length in the media at the time (late 1997/early 1998, and would have been much closer to happening than say ben cousins coming to SA now.

why does that question make you think i'm big noting myself ? as lbt said it was in all media outlets at the time & i am curious if it was really a media beatup or was there some real substance in the story & fwiw if i was going to big note myself i'd be doing/saying better than that

From what i remember, Uncle Dougie did have a chat to him and quoted in the Advertiser how great it would be to have him at Westies and the crowds that would have poured through the gates just to see him play would bring in plenty of $$$$ for the club. Why it didn't eventuate only a few would know.

At the time Ablett was sighted watching West Adelaide training along with his manager Ricky Nixon. So one would assume that clearly the option was looked at. Yet what caused it not to happen who knows! Go ask Doug!

i rekon doug has the contract with the signiture on it app garry wanted about $200 more than doug offered him and garry turned it down at the last minute... what a player westies would have had him alone could have gotten us a flag

Yeh he could of got them a flag,if he signed for the 10k base & $2500 a game that he was offered.
Jeremy Clayton signed the same deal at Magpies,but unfortunately,hasn't got him a flag yet!
