Is this the closest Poll we've had? Most seem to be one-sided (eg the Nickleback Poll  )

Did the voters like Nickleback?

"Baby on board". Why dont you put a sign on ur car saying "adult on board" or "car stereo in use"?

Agree with both in a way, Yes- the team was better than the other clubs that year, you can only really beat the competition you are playing, but some eras deserve more respect than others, like the one's before 1991....

Wedgie, I think you have summed it up to a tee. Agree if you look at over the past 10 years Centrals has been the team that has declined the least and hats off to them for doing that. Us however........ :( :(

I think Port supporters are the best to judge here, which team is better from the last 25 years: 79-81 team, 88-90 team, 94-96 team or the 98-99 team? That will give a reasonable indication of which era is best. However thinking Port Supporters is an oxymoron so maybe my research design is flawed from the start

Having said that, when the Bays win the flag this year  , I will celebrate like there is no tomorrow, safe in the knowledge that I will have no problems getting a car park around the Bay oval, unlike 1985..........

The bottom line though is a flag is a flag is a flag no matter what era, they are all very important to the supporters and players of the club that salute the judge.

Its undeniable Centrals are the benchmark as we speak.....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Was only a kid when the 1979-1981 teams ran around but it's fair to say the 1980 team was pretty special - smashed every team that season, although the Grand Final was a tough one.

1980
F: Boyd, Evans, Cahill
HF: Clifford, Faletic, Agius
C: Abernethy, Williams, Kinnear
HB: Hannan, Phillips, Hofner
B: Eckermann, Sorrell, Bradmore
R: Natt, Ebert, Cunningham
Int: Dolan, Porlycia
Missing injured: Giles

Of the other premiership teams post-1981, I reakon 1990 has the wood on the others, followed by 1992.

1990
F: Hynes, Hodges, Mahney
HF: Wanganeen, D. Dmith, Ginever
C: Hutton, Abernethy, Tregenza
HB: Foster, Phillips, Northeast
B: Fiacchi, Harris, Rizonico
R: Johnston, M. Williams, S. Williams
Int: Settre, Phelps
Missing injured: Brown, R. Smith

1992
F: Abernethy, Hodges, Brown
HF: Borlase, D. Smith, S. Williams
C: Hutton, Buckley, R. Smith
HB: Foster, Phillips, Northeast
B: Fiacchi, Delaney, Rizonico
R: Chalmers, M. Williams, Ginever
Int: Hughes, Settre
Missing injured: Tylor

All three teams included the Magarey Medallist and leading goalkicker.

Listing Tylor as "missing injured" counts as being in a premiership team?!?

Tylor didn't play because we beat the Port twos the week before, and he played, I know because gave him a drink as a trainer that day.....

After I spat in it......

No but the premiership teams of those years aren't exactly 100% in their representation of of Port's best 20 in those years.

I listed the 'missing injured' players - Giles, Brown, R. Smith and Tylor - because they were regulars in those particular years.

Tinpot Dynasty. Have a look at some of the blokes in that Centrals side and tell me how they would go against the greats of the 70's and the 80's? Centrals deserve credit for being the best as it has been quite rightly been pointed out, you can only beat those who are up against you, but the comp is a shadow of what it was and that shadow shades the collection of tinpot TS Hill trophies that are conglomerating at Elizabeth. I still wish it was my mob but :)

regards,

Yes yah are right two teams play in a Grand Final there is only one winner so really eras have nothing to do with it, its really got to do with finances.

If a club is financially strong it will win premierships ie Port ,Norwood, Sturt in the past but now it is Central Districts am i right what do yah all think !!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Image

This could go on for ever and ever. A financially strong club will usually also be strong on field, watch out for North this year and for years to come. But comparing era's, come on. Is Pontings eleven as good as the Invicibles? Would they beat Clive Lloyd's West Indies? Statistics can be bent and objectivity is up to the individual. But none the less, good post.

Worth starting that debate in the cricket forum... For what it's worth, The Aussie XI which had that amazing run of wins (starting in Tassie) are the greatest Test team.... anyway, as I said before, a flag is a flag....

What nobody has mentioned is that many of the early SAFA(SANFL) premierships did not actually exist. The premiership teams were decided retrospectively. Regular rosters & league tables were not introduced until the 1890s

An example is Norwood DID NOT win 6 premierships from 1878. The papers of time only note that Norwood had the best record of the season..... no trophy/flag was awardered or even mentioned. Norwood REAL premiership tally is much lower than they claim.

Therefore some flags are worth more than others
