Not sure of the relevance of that post, but Smith as CHF played a key role in a lot of those premierships. Very under-rated player at SANFL level.

Struggled at AFL level admittedly, but played a big part in Port's sucess throughout his SANFL careeer.

it's pretty deep. The analogy means, just because he played in a great side, doesn't mean he was a great player.

A player can't fluke playing as Centre Half Forward in that many premierships.

He wasn't an absolute champion, but was a key part of the Port side of his era, and was seen as an option for the Crows when they entered the AFL.

A lof of the criticisms of Smith seemed to come from his days with the Crows in their early days.

The overwhelming majority of Port supporters really rated his contribribution for the club from the mid 80's.

I was pretty happy to have him in my side, I never said he was "great", but he was certainly unfairly maligned, which is the point I'm making.

Definitely made a signifcant contribition to Port's success.

340 games, 450 goals, 7 premierships. If you had an 18yo CHF coming through and be told that would be his career you'd take that every day of the week without thinking.

Probably the most underrated footballer in SANFL history imo. Copped shit from opponents. Copped shit from his own supporters. So he wasnt a hard arse, big deal. What he was, was a very athletic, consistent, big game CHF who structurally was as important as any other Port player of that era.

=D> Well said! Not to mention, Smithy was our focal point in the brief period between the retirement of Tim Evans and the emergence of Scott Hodges.
