Robertson 9 goals for Subiaco, Shillabeer 4 goals for Norwood.

The Austin Robertson story would be an interesting one.
From memory his stats are up there with the best.
But of course he played in a different country to Victoria so probably won't be recognised accordingly.

why was his cricket career only 9 matches?
Matty Wade is a star and deserves more respect from the forum family!

He debuted 1/11/57
His last game was on 21-25 November 1958
He coached WT in 1959
Might be he could not combine coaching a SANFL club, and play SS cricket as a young man ?
Maybe he was not selected by the SA cricket selectors ?
Maybe with Richie Benaud being the AU leg spinning allrounder, Head knew he would struggle to make the Test team ! ?

He was a father about this time ?
Head was a good looking footballer, and he had a good looking daughter !
Lindsay and his daughter were often seen at Globe Derby in the 70s
''Shereally'' caught my eye, perhaps the best looking woman seen at Globe Derby until I took my wife there
Perhaps being a dad, cricket player , footy coach was too demanding ?

Where do we start this season ?

BEST ?
Perhaps the best footballer at the start of 1960 playing in the SANFL was Lindsay Head [WT]
Often acknowledged by some as the 2nd best WT footballer after Bob Hank
Between 1945-1967 in 23 seasons Hank won 9 B/F Head won 8 B/F
Ive had the privilege to see Head in action, he was one of the flashiest skillfull footballers Ive seen in the SANFL
He mainly played Centre, or as in the 60s rested at half forward at times

COACH + CAREER
Head was the captain coach of WT in 1959/1960[and also in 1981 ]
He started off capt coaching at the age of 23, both times WT finished in 5th spot
1960 B/F was R MORRELL
1960 leading goalkicker M CLINGLY [51]
Head captained from 1959-1962, but not any year after that
Head captained the SA state team in 1960
Played 334 games, the first player in SANFL history to play 300 games

QUESTIONS
Head was approached to play by other SANFL clubs, and VFL clubs, anyone know which clubs ?

He was born in North Adelaide, could he have played for North ?

He may have been born at North Adelaide (as a lot of us were) but he lived all of his ealy life living in Thebarton, just on the city side of South Road only about 500 metres or so from the oval, so he was always going to be a Torrens player.

Also as a cricketer he was a big hitter. His main claim to fame was that he hit a six on all of the first class grounds he played on.

He also played as a rover quite often, but he was more suited to be a centreman.

Austin played for South Melbourne in 1966 and kicked 60. He was involved in the administration of Packer's World Series Cricket. His father played 154 games for South Melbourne, he was a sprint coach who worked with Dennis Lillee after his back injury in 1973.

Lindsay Head played his final match at Norwood on 18 July 1970 as a testimony to Bob Hank whose career was ended by Dick Jones at Norwood Oval years earlier.

PA had won 6 flags in a row 1954-1959
At that stage no team apart from PA had won the flag since the 1954 Adelaide Earthquake
By the time 1960 came, the comp needed a shake up
I would imagine some non PA supPORTers were craving thier team or a different team to win the 1960 flag

The finishing positions of the clubs in 1959

1 PA
2 WA
3 GL
4 ST
5 WT
6 NW
7 NA
8 SA

The remarkable thing about 1960 was that 2 non finalists from 1959 would play off in the 1960 Grand Final

NA 14-11
NW 13-12

Would be most interesting to see how 1960 panned out
Coincidently Adelaide Hawk [NW] RobranisGod [NA] barracked for NA + NW
Hopefully either or both can shed some info on the 1960 season

Quite an achievement for a player to have hit a 6 on every first class venue he played on, considering he made 425 career runs

I think an even more remarkable thing was the rivalry between North Adelaide and Norwood throughout the season. They met 4 times, winning 2 each, and the largest winning margin was 6 points.

Scores:
R3 (Norwood Oval): Norwood 11-11 (77), d. North Adelaide 9-18 (72)
R11 (Kensington Oval): North Adelaide 11-19 (85), d, Norwood 12-10 (82)
R15 (Prospect Oval): Norwood 11-11 (77), d. North Adelaide 10-11 (71)
GF (Adelaide Oval): North Adelaide 14-11 (95), d. Norwood 13-12 (90)

Pity Grand Final day was North's turn to win :)

Hawk we gavem a decent hiding at Prospect Oval that day !
History shows 2 wins each
Those score lines are incredibly similar
NW scored 3 points more in the 4 encounters
Was any of the 2 teams considered a better team ?

What was the minor round finish ?

I have vague memories of the 1960 season and the finals. North were favourites in the Grand Final but not by much. In the papers it seemed to be about 3 to 2 amongst the journalists in North's favour. Like so many years around that time there seemed almost to be two competitions with Port, Norwood, North, West and Torrens competing for finals spots and Sturt, South and Glenelg making up the numbers. I know 1959 and 1964 were exceptions, but that was the perception around the traps at that stage a bit like the so called "Big 4" of the mid 1970s thru to early 80s.

Interesting to note that North got 64 goals in the minor round from their two rovers, Billy Thomas and Peter Sheppard, yet Sheppard who had been a state player was dropped just before the end of the minor round to be replaced by Barry Potts who went on to kick 7 goals in the Grand Final.

I am surprised to see Jeff Bray in that list, I only remember him as a Centre Half Back and Full Back. The only other two players I have no recollection of in that list are Brian Johnson of Norwood and Don Douglas of Sturt.

If Hank Lindner polled 12 Magarey Votes and Chicken Hayes 11, the umpires that year didn't pay much attention to the fairest criteria for the Magarey Medal. Every team had a player like them in those days but let's just say that they were very, very tough and took as much punishment as they handed out.
