Clean Sweep

Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

Re: Clean Sweep

Postby FOURTH ESTATE » Tue Mar 17, 2009 11:08 pm

Probably upset all the Rooster fans with this one.

I was born in 1964 so I'll start from there. I have followed Glenelg ever since I can remember. My parents were North Adelaide followers as they both grew up only a few dropkicks from the ground and paternal my grandfather played in the under age side of the times at North in the 1930's as well as for Broadview in the local comp.

I'll use 1964 as a starting point as that was the year I was born.

1964 - 1990 Minor Round Games

W L D
Port Adelaide 400 167 5
Glenelg 350 216 4
Sturt 349 216 5
Norwood 317 246 7
North Adelaide 316 253 2

1964 - 1990 Major Round Games

W L D
Port Adelaide 33 26
Glenelg 32 25
Sturt 24 18
Norwood 24 23
North Adelaide 15 15

Grand Total

W L D
Port Adelaide 433 193 5
Glenelg 382 241 4
Sturt 373 234 4
Norwood 341 269 7
North Adelaide 331 268 2

Finals Appearances

Port Adelaide 24
Glenelg 20
Norwood 20
Sturt 18
North Adeaide 14

Premierships

Port Adelaide 8
Sturt 7
Norwood 4
Glenelg 3
North Adelaide 2

Glenelg vs North Adelaide

Minor Round 35-25
Finals 6 - 2

Total 41 - 27

A 60.29 winning percentage to the Tigers over the roosters during this period

Sorry North fans you don't qualify as one of the BIG 4 during this boom period for the SANFL before the Crows arrived

I know it is subjective over a certain time period but it is during my life time.

GO THE TIGERS

During this period 1964 - 1990

Glenelg
Port Adelaide
Sturt
Norwood

Were obviously the BIG 4
2017, 2019 & 2020 PREMIERS
RICHMOND, RICHMOND, RICHMOND.

Let that be a lesson to you Sturt. You don't beat Glenelg 3 times in a row in Grand Finals and get away with it.

That's really good but we won three premierships in that time frame.

I normally credit the majority of Glenelg supporters as intelligent but some of them seriously have little man's syndrome?

What is fouth estates next anti-North installment - Cornes and Marker were better players than Robran maybe?

Mate, no matter what starting point and end point you use North's history and success as an SANFL power is better than that of Glenelg.
However North's 3 premierships AND a Champions of Australia plus 9 Magarey Medals (to Glenelg's 4) between 1964 & 1990 says it all.

What does Glenelg's 4 equate to??? They won 3 flags and only had 3 MM's according to the official records of the SANFL in that period?

Still hard to convince their supporters that they are not a powerhouse. Maybe they should select their first 5 seasons in the league and try a debate that era?

Yeah, we cn compare oursleves to Woodville c 1980-85 and Sturt c 1989-1995, We weren't the least powerhouse of our era as we ony ever came 8th where as those two clubs came 10th and 9th respectively....

Do you reckon we set a pattern for our history when we sacked our most winningest coach in 1925 following his first loss after our first win...

I mean FFS what have Simmo, Symo and McGuinness got to whinge about....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

A club's status in the game is subject to your date of birth? :?

And that finished nearly 20 years ago.

Funny that it's always North fans who feel left out when the Big 4 is raised.
Facts are, it was based on a combination of success and attendances in the 70s and 80s.
Like has been said earlier, the SANFL ratified the notion with their programming.

In the 80s by and large Glenelg, Norwood, Port and Sturt were programmed on the same weekend to play each other. They invariably played each other three times a season too to maximise Crowds

That is if Port played Norwood, Glenelg played Sturt.
If Sturt played Norwood, Glenelg played Port etc etc etc

Go and check old programmes

I'm more than happy to be proven wrong

Spelly a job for you if you can post the fixtures from the 80s

Whilst they never said it pubically their tacit acknowledgement via the programming indicates who teh big four were

*sigh* ohh for the days...

So North v Glenelg would not have been a crowd puller in the 80s - more so than Glenelg v Sturt?

Sturt were shite in the 80s finishing 3rd, 6th, 4th, 2nd, 7th, 5th, 8th, 9th, 5th, 10th.
North were 8th, 8th, 7th, 4th, 8th, 2nd, 2nd, 1st, 6th, 2nd.

I can understand North v Port not being because we beat Port most of the time in the 80s ;)

Being an amateur historian I've written a letter to the SANFL asking that only records between 1964 and 1990 should be included in future statistics and publications. I'm eagerly awaiting their answer.

If that's the case i was born in 85 and from 85-99 the magpies played in 10 gf and won 9 flags. Also just from 88-90 we won more flags than glenelg, but what are you smoking glenelg big 4. No offence to any other club but durning the time frame i always thought it was the big 3 port, norwood and sturt and if there was a 4th powerhouse it would of been north because you have to win things to be a powerhouse.
The problem with Barcelona is that I like fish and chips but they had to turn it into calamari and patatas

During that time there was really only 1 Powerhouse ... The others were crowd pullers at times, but as much as it hurts to say, none were powerhouses.

I was talking from 64-90 which was f.e. was saying was the time frame. I know Port were the powerhouse but we didnt have it all our own way, but I can see what your saying a club may pop up here or there and win the flag but only one team dominated, like at the moment with the dogs being the powerhouse
