Ahhh my error then :P I'm soooo used to oppositon supporters bagging Smith so go into "automatic" defensive mode as soon as i hear them say something thats not clearly positive about him :P

I know a South supporter who reads this site who quite enjoys bagging Smith. I dont know why, was always one of my favourite players.

Can't argue with that, I just thought it was wrong to boo him off the oval in a state game!

As much as people wan't 2 slag Smithy,he's a player i thought was the backbone of ports success in the 80s & 90s.
The hardest position 2 play on the ground CHF,yet time & time again,he'd dictate proceedings.
His presentation,strong hands in a marking contest,his ability 2 always give a contest,made him a quality FWD.
He kicked a sh!t load of goals, has 7 premiership medals & you blokes want 2 bag him.geez your not bad.
Any of you done better than that?

You're absolutely right footballmagic. Supporters of some clubs really have no idea. Smith was no superstar, but he contributed hugely towards Port's success in the 80's in the most difficult position on the ground.

I think you'll notice most of the posts in here are supportive of Smith, but given he played for Port he will cop a bit around these parts.

Not a great player, but a good one at SANFL level, supported by a strong team - like Hodges in that really!

I think North supporters were probably the quietest when it came to Smith as he always killed us, I used to hear him cop more flack from Port supporters than North supporters.

I will clarify my post in regards to Smith was in jest.

But, I reckon i agree with Wedgie about Smith and Port supporters. I wouldn't be surprised it was Magpies supporters who gave him the sobriquet Doreen. And the supporters of other footy clubs probably thought that if it was all right for Scum supporters to have a crack at him, then he was certainly any easy target for the 'us' to get into.

He could be frustrating could Smithy. Sometimes he would go missing, or miss an easy shot at goal, or drop a simple mark or handball to the opposition. But he always put in, always presented time and time again, would get up and battle on if hurt and would always put his heart into it when out on the field.

I remember at Footy Park around nearing the mid 90s, he dropped a mark or something and a middle aged Port 'supporting' lady gave him an earful. 'Youre a disgrace to Port Adelaide, get off the ground, youre hopeless' etc. He then kicked 3 goals in about 5 minutes. About 5 of us all turned around and gave her an earful back.

As the coaches and Captains always said....you could always count on Darren in big games because he always rose to the occasion and played his best when it mattered most. Would kick an important goal, give out a great assist or lay a great tackle. His flying mark and goal in the 3rd quarter of the 96 GF was as important as any he kicked. He was incredible in the 92 GF...and 89 from memory. The only GF where he had an off day was in 88.

He was one of the biggest mainstays in one of the SANFLs greatest eras of all time, played AFL, played state footy. A fantastic career which im sure he'll look back on with pride and achievement. Just a pity that a lot of people - mostly Port people - will undervalue his contribution to our clubs success.

Yes! Absolutely. Did you think I meant something else??

Port dominated when they did because of their professionalism and aggression. The other teams were playing as amateurs having fun and took a while to realise what was happening to the game. Too many SANFL teams still haven't quite got the idea I suspect.

Darren's limitation was perhaps that he had caught up with this less than most of the Port team and was a little patchy in form, but rose to occasions as others have said.

Other teams playing were playing as amateurs, what a load of sh!t dog.
You blokes can't give credit where its due.
Back in that era,it was a far better standard 2 what it is 2day.
Smith would sh!t all over the current CHF's.
When the standard was good, even Central's couldn't win a flag.

You could argue whether or not teams of today would beat teams in the 80s - I reckon teams of today would have the upper hand on fitness - but as someone who is committed to preserving and in a way promoting the League and its' history through my stats, I don't think anyone should try and downgrade any teams premierships (or multiple premierships) because of the V/AFL induced reduction of talent.

We as SANFL fans take pride in our competition mainly because of two things: continuity of tradition and the atmosphere generated by the suburban rivalries. Both have largely been dissipated in the AFL though ground rationalisation and the interstate teams. Which is why we shouldn't need to downgrade this decades (or the 90s) flags as opposed to the 70s and the 80s to uphold that continuing tradition that this 130 year competition has.
