It would have been a rousing victory for the legs, and perhaps a relief to many SANFL footy suPORTers
It ended a PA attempt to win 7 consequtive Premierships

Haydn Bunton and John Vickers where 2 players who were involved in the painting expedition
They went to the corner of St Vincent street and Commercial Road corner to what is known as the Black Diamond corner
THE BD corner is a traditional balck and white painted corner
Vickers and Bunton cheekily painted it red and blue
It is no surprise to learn that John Vickers profession was a painter !

The black diamond corner actually referred to a roundabout that was in the middle of the intersection. I don't know how best to describe it, but I have attached a picture.

Beautiful work Mac!

A couple of questions/observations:

Edwards - presumably Greg (not Singer!)
I recall the Powerful Pressuring Peckers banner, but I cannot recall the Woodvilles Winning Woodpeckers banner ever??? When did this go missing?

Gary Edwards. Ex Glenelg in the mid 60's. Went on to captain coach the Reserves premiership in 1973.

It went missing somewhere in the early 70's. I also love the Coopers banner.

No, it depicts Lindsay Head after a game signing an autograph, and some female looks as though she's going to give him a kiss or a hug.

I don't know if it made the cover of a Football Budget, but I think the picture you are thinking of is when Lindsay Head broke the (then) record for the most number of SANFL games (259) in 1966.

ALAN KILLIGREW
known as the hot gospeller
came from SK to coach NW in 1959
NW finished 6th in a 8 team comp in 1959[lost the first 5 games, and almost made the finals]
Killa wanted success at the Parade and embarked on a extensive recruiting campaign to recruit for the 1960 season
The recruits included, with games played
BOWE [74]
BRENCHLEY[30]
DELLAR [52]
FEEHAN[56]
GORDON[10]
STEPHENS [31]
others ?
These guys didnt last long, but they might have made an impact as NW made the 1960 G/F
The$e recruit$ were paid the 'princely' $um of $100 pound$ to play for NW !

1960 SCANDAL
There was an accusation or heresay that the NW players were on Pep Pills in 1960
Norwoods much improved form was attributed by some as a result of the pill popping
From what Ive read, Killagrew was a very vibrant person, and made an impression on the Adelaide public, and the press, so the press would have had some pep with this
Kila made this comment :
"' There were no pills, we were one of the first to use handball, thats all, we would create packs and then undo them with handball.""
I wonder what Glen [WT] thought of the Pill scandal ...

WALKERVILLE
2 of the greats have played at this club
Barrie Robran and myself
In the mid seventies we had a guest coach at the club
Alan Killagrew took us for a training session
I didnt know who he was, until another player told me he had coached NW
My impressions :
he could talk
he was passionate
he was enthralling
Another coach was later to remind me of Kila, that being Graham Mr Footy Punt Campbell

1960 GRAND FINAL NA V NW
It would be great if Robranisgod and Adelaide Hawk gave thier respective views on what must have been one of the great grand finals
Then we can have a crack at 1961 Hawky !

I was at the 1960 Grand Final and do remember the day but most of my information comes from the papers of the day and a magnificent audio of the last quarter as called by Tom Warhurst and Max Hall. Even though Tom was a Norwood great and Max Hall a Norwood supporter it is a fantastic accurate unbiased call. Through Mal's outSTANding brother, I was able to give a copy to young Tom Warhurst not long before Tom senior's death. I was thrilled when I was told that they loved the call and that Tom's brother John, who also played a few games for Norwood also wanted a copy even though as hard as he tried their father couldn't get Norwood home.

Before I get onto the game properly I wonder if most posters here realise that this Grand Final was in the middle of a run where North beat Norwood every time that met in a finals match between 1933 and 1995. Given that Norwood I think won 9 premierships in that period and North won 7 in the same period and both teams only "won" one wooden spoon each in that period I find that a remarkable statistic.

Another interseting aside is that North and Norwood had met in the Grand Final 8 years previous in 1952. North won that game by a then record margin, yet only Don Gilbourne, who had also played in North's 1949 premiership was the only player from either side who played in both the 1952 and 1960 Grand Finals. I find that quite remarkable too.

Probably the most prophetic words about the 1960 GF were by Sam Gallagher in the Sunday Mail after the Preliminary Final. He wroite, "Bunton got a knock today and was struggling throughout, while Brenchley left the field in the last quarter. If those two are below par, Thomas and Potts could win the game for North".

Barry Potts, who only came into the team in the final 4 games of 1960, kicked 10 goals, seven of which were in the Grand Final. I'm led to believe Potts is related in some way to Norwood legendary stalwart and Head Trainer Tiger Potts.

With help from 'Never Say Die', a brilliant publication of the North Adelaide Football Club Historical Group.

Don Gilbourne won the toss in ideal conditions and chose the Cathedral end. Johnson kicked the first goal, and assisted by CHF John Lill, Norwood raced to an early lead of 18 points. Trenorden goaled for North, then Wells posted for the Redlegs.

Potts booted two quicks ones, a snap from the pocket and and pass from Don Lindner. North turned up the heat with Barbary shining on ac wing, Potts put on his 3rd to give the Roosters ca 3 point lead. Lindner goaled to stretch the lead to 9 points at 1/4 time.

Wedding was dominating the hitouts, but Norwood found no advantage as Ray Trenorden was nullifying Haydn Bunton. North gained ascendancy in key positions through Don Lindner and Brian Gamling, the latter blanketing Lill with pace. North’s centre line were also on top, Ron Hewett kicking to Potts for his 4th major.

Shortly afterwards, Potts was felled and could not resume for several minutes. The game became more physical as Norwood struggled with North’s pace. Norwood hit the front by 3 points, but Potts replied soon after kicking goal number five. With Gilbourne starring in defence, North went in at half time with a 7 point lead thanks to a goal from Barry Kent.

Early in the third term Thomas goaled for North giving them a 15 point lead, but Wedding replied for Norwood. In a rare moment of freedom, Lill broke clear to goal. Trevor Hughes replied with a snap from a boundary throw in. Then Bob Hammond raced through the centre and delivered a 70 yard drop kick, accepted off hands by Potts who snapped truly for his 6th goal. John Vickers kicked a goal late for the Redlegs and at ¾ time, North held a slender 4 point lead.

For the first 10 minutes of the final term, neither side was able to score, then Lill and Peter Vivian struck for Norwood giving them an 8 point lead. With only 10 minutes and time on remaining, Malcolm Whitford brought North to within 2 points with a long screw punt goal. Barrie Barbary burst through and goaled with a drop kick on the run. Then Bob Pascoe’s long shot came off hands to Trenorden who knocked on to Potts for his 7th goal. The game seemed over.

However, Norwood wasn’t finished yet. Vickers’ long shot bouncedcthrough to bring the margin back to only 5 points. In the dying seconds, Lill sent the ball forward but North’s defence stood firm. The siren sounded with the ball in Gilbourne’s hands, and his team 5 points the better. North Adelaide, premiers in 1960.

When did Norwood change from this type of guernsey (similar to Melbourne Football Club)?

Are you sure Cousins was the 20th man. I have just listened to the audio and they mention Swanbury coming onto the ground in the last quarter as a replacement for Wells. Also in the fantastic snippet provided by GWW, Swanbury's name is listed on the scoreboard with his number as used to happen with a late change that wasn't included in the budget.
