Classic Club Sponsors

Postby SANFLnut » Tue Apr 27, 2010 7:51 pm

Who are the club sponsors that you still associate with teams even though they may no longer have an association?

For me Westies and Banner will never be separated - not sure how long they were here but Guernsey just does not look the same with out it. Sturt & AVCO through the 80's, Any other faves out there?

Think it was Standard Chartered for Port and Associated Midland for Glenelg. Had no idea what the companies are/were (guessing Port's was an Accountancy firm?), but remember them on their guernseys when I first started following footy as a kid.

Associated Midland were a bank/finance company IIRC similar to AVCO and AGC.

AVCO were Sturts most "Classic" sponsors
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Yep, sponsored Carlton at the same time.

Associated Midland was fantastic on the Bays jumper.

North circa 1979 - the "new pink pages". You'll take sponsorship where you can get it!

Torrens were definitely sponsored by Hallett in the early 80s

Bays had Ultra Tune in the late 80s and early 90s (Agree that the associated midland looked way better, particularly the 'dragon' looking emblem they had (83-85 I reakon)

Central Pye Audio was with the cracking racing stripe guernsey

Woodville's Easybuilt rings a bell- did that continue during the late 80s?

Reckon Norwood had Vilis during Tractor Prime's days, was too easy to sledge the big fella in a lycra guernsey.

Best one the maggies had was Cash Converters! Eerily fitting nowadays...

Think Easybuilt were sponsors in the early-mid 80's and in the last couple of years it was Devon Homes. Not sure whether there was a link between the two companies.

Still remember the Easybuilt "King Kong Strong" ads.

Another ad I remember was the Rymill or Raymill ads that went Raymill clap-clap-clap like a cheersquad. Were they an outdoor verandah and patio company? They used to play these during the footy replays, probably 83-86(?), but not sure whether they sponsored a team or just the footy replay.

IIRC 1978 was the first year sponsors' logos appeared on guernseys. Here's some from memory...

North Adelaide - PHR Group of Companies
Woodville - JM insurance (79 no sponsor in 78 IIRC)
Sturt - Graham Douglas Datsun
West Adelaide - Eustice Motorcity
South Adelaide - Pentreath Insurance
Port Adelaide - Lenworth Finance
Glenelg - Anglevale Wines
West Torrens - Brecknock Finance (?) - not 100% sure on the name
Norwood - AGC
Central District - Elizabeth Town Centre (this may have been 79 and Parabanks might be 78)

The fact that I remember these is truly the sign of a wasted youth , and the power of sponsorship. ;)
