Chalk & Cheese

Postby smac » Sun Mar 16, 2008 4:29 pm

I went to a sportsmans night on Friday night at Argana Park (was to raise funds for a junior football trip later this season). The 2 guest speakers were Peter Bythien and Grenville Dietrich. A cracker of a night, 2 completely different guys - one doesn't (and never has) drink or smoke, the other is Grenville.

They relayed some great stories, one in particular about the night before a big game between the 2 clubs, when a couple of Centrals past players took Grenville out for the night, poured him into a cab at about 2 in the morning in an effort to reduce his influence. He kicked 11 or 12 and can hardly remember the game.

Twice he kicked more than 10 goals against Central:

Round 11 1983
North 3.6 6.8 12.13 18.16 (124) - he kicked 12.3
Central 5.1 10.3 13.6 16.8 (104)
Elizabeth, 4657

Round 4 1986
North 7.4 9.9 17.16 25.21 (171) - he kicked 11.2
Central 3.4 8.11 11.12 13.13 (91)
Adelaide, 7010

It was the 1983 game he was alluding to. I heard it was Central's officials that took him out though.
Very important game at the time too as both sides were battling for a top 5 spot.

They may have been that as well as past players...

And that's why they took him out for the night!

That's what I thought - North was 6th, 1 game and 6.52% behind South and Central was 1.04% behind North coming into that match.

And the previous season they battled for a finals place again, with the dogs winning that one (if they recall correctly).

Both Central and North after Round 15 were 3 games behind Norwood in 1982. By Round 18 as you said, it was virtually a playoff as to who had a chance of making the 5. Both teams were 2 and half games behind Glenelg at this stage.

Round 18 1982
Central 4.2 12.6 17.8 21.15 (141)
North 5.6 9.8 16.9 20.13 (133)
Adelaide, 5509

North were as good as out of the race at this stage - they needed to win all of their games and Glenelg to lose all 4. North lost in Round 19 anyway to Sturt, so it was only Central left in the race, still 2 1/2 games behind Glenelg.

It was West that Central replaced in 5th spot - West lost 3 out of their last 4 games and Central won all four. So Central won their last 7 to make the five. Central were 0.01% and 1 game behind West heading into the last round. But Central had the more favourable match - West played Norwood (3rd after Round 21) and Central played Torrens (9th).

Those games in 1982 would have been great to watch as a spectacle. I'll go even further and list them:

Round 16 1982
Central 2.2 8.9 14.17 20.23 (143)
Sturt 9.5 15.6 18.11 21.15 (141)
Unley, 6218

This obviously was the turning point of the season - the biggest ever comeback by a side.

Round 17 1982
Central 3.7 7.9 13.15 15.15 (105)
South 2.2 5.5 8.5 12.6 (78)
Elizabeth, 4389

Round 18 as above

Round 19 1982
Central 6.4 12.9 15.18 22.20 (152)
West 7.4 10.8 16.12 20.18 (138)
Richmond, 4859

Round 20 1982
Central 9.5 14.11 23.16 30.18 (198)
Glenelg 1.3 5.4 5.8 13.11 (89)
Glenelg, 9495

This is still the highest score against Glenelg at Glenelg, and some payback for 1975.

Round 21 1982
Central 6.7 9.10 13.17 17.19 (121)
Woodville 5.1 8.7 14.10 16.13 (109)
Elizabeth, 5697

Round 22 1982
Central 6.4 13.7 21.10 32.13 (205)
Torrens 3.2 8.6 11.7 12.11 (83)
Elizabeth, 6927

Probably the effort to get a place in the five took the wind out, as of course Glenelg came from the Elimination Final in that year to reach the GF:

Elimination Final 1982
Glenelg 3.4 9.9 15.15 19.21 (135)
Central 3.0 5.4 9.6 12.13 (85)
Football Park, 23218

Elimination Final 1982
Glenelg 3.4 9.9 15.15 19.21 (135)
Central 3.0 5.4 9.6 12.13 (85)

Seeing as we are talking 1982 wasn't that the year Oatey got crook and John McInness had to step into the breach as senior coach.

Would McInnes realitively more modern coaching style (for 1982) have helped Sturt in the finals when they went out instraight sets?

Spelly what were the records of Sturt under Oatey and McInness in 1982....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I reckon that was the year Tassie.

Centrals comeback win over Sturt was almost the complete reverse of the previous meeting between the teams earlier in the season when the Dogs had been in front by about 10 goals at footy park only for Sturt to reel them in.

Was such a great season of football, would possibly be perfect if we could remove Paul Weston's freak performance against Norwood late in the year from all records and memory :D

You should read an article I saw recently, claiming the 84 season as the best... I reckon you and the writer could have a good old debate about the 2 seasons...

I don't actually have the rounds in which McInnes was coach, but if someone does I could answer that. :)

The other comeback match between Central and Sturt in 1982 was:

Round 7 1982
Sturt 0.3 8.9 13.13 20.15 (135)
Central 7.7 14.9 16.13 18.15 (123)
Football Park, 10269
