Punting Golden Rules

I'm so angry with myself today - one of my personal golden rules for punting was never do each way bets in races with under 8 starters as I would always back the horse that would run third and pay no dividend. So for the last few years I stayed away from these bets. Today I thought re the early tip given on this website for Varenna Miss in Race 2 Sandown - "Give it a go surely that golden rule can be broken now after all this time". So I backed Varenna Miss each way - watched it attempt to run in any direction except forwards for the first 800m of the race - then fly home to finish.....third and of course pay nothing.

So that has set me wondering - what are other people's golden rules re punting?

In AFL never punt on matches involving Freo is a common one but I'm just wondering what rules do we follow with horses,dogs, sports punting etc...

Never bet on drivers that constantly look at the electronic time boards everytime they go past to work ouy how fast or slow they are going.

Betting in NTD races for whatever reasons I cant win often enough betting EW

But some interesting dividends come about backing long odds on hot favs EW in 7 horse fields
The place div occasionally equals and or excedes the win dividend

When betting EW I always try and bet in 8-9-10 runners fields
occasionally 11
whenever I back a horse EW in 12+ runners races, how often they run foooooooooourth !

i dont mind bettin each way on something in a NTD field, coz occasionally u get good odds on the place for some..

but yeah it does suck they have to run 1st or 2nd

i actually prefer to bet place in ntd races you get inflated odds for example at globe last night cocolossal ran at $1.20 win but $1.30 place it ran 2nd surely punting is about getting the right odds and making profits

hahaha Betting for a place on the tote is a joke.
Yeah yeah, some one will point out an example on a dog or trot race where there was an inflated place dividend but try putting $200 on it and see what happens. The place pools are so small that u simply cant place a decent bet on for a place and not markedly affect the dividends.
How often do u see a $1.80 chance showing $1.60 a place seconds b4 the jump only to see it end up showing $1.00 And it surprisingly doesn't take much money for that to happen.

PLACE punting blind on the TAB = very very very hard to win over long periods of time
PLACE punting set odds BOOKIES or BETFAIR = much much much better chance of winning

How many times have I punted the $1-50 place cert to see it tumble into $1-20 final place div
If its showing $1-20 on the jump = no bet

i agree if your having $500 plus on unitab thats why most serious punters have accounts all over the country i usually have a place bets early on uni tab to inflate the odds of others and it only takes $200 to have it showing money back for most of the betting my main bets are on other tabs since ive been punting like this ive made good profits

What you guys are talking about with place betting... Surely if you were betting that much the place you would use sportsbet or similar where you can still bet on unitab but it doesnt affect the prices...

What we need to work out. Is what we know more about. And punt to that. Because if we find answers in something we are aleady knowledgeable in. Chances are that less people know about it. And the less people that know about it. The better. Because that is where you can lock in an edge.

Basically if you look at a race and can only find what everyone else finds. Then long term that won't be good for your punting.

One of the big factors in our new found knowledge is the ability to be accurate over a long period of time. And we need to know that we are accurate. And the only way to find that out. Is by keeping results.

So my two golden punting rules are:

Punt on scenario's that you are knowledgeable in.
Keep results.

Very very good advice.

I only place bets if I am very sure that I know more about the event than the bookmaker, and hence I am sure that the bookmaker has got the odds wrong.

That is why I basically only bet on the SANFL and domestic cricket - the two things that I feel confident I know more about than the bookies. The only other times I bet is when it is obvious that the bookies have stuffed up the odds somehow.
