We got some pretty bad news today. Our syndicate which part owned a 2yo filly by Lohnro, got vetted for a larynx issue. Turns out it restricts the horses breathing when under any exertion.

So that means it will (in the vets words) never be an athlete. So we have to scrap the idea of going to the races to see Maghro and cheer her on. Shame, because the horse was apparently working well despite the breathing problems. Of course, that was over 3-600m of work not under race conditions.

So that means we're down the gurgler nearly 8k. As they told us, there are many hard luck stories and most horses don't even race. You just never expect it to happen to you!

So we're now 5 horses down and still not had one winner!

Really unlucky, it will be so much sweeter when you do get one.
My syndicate and my brother and his mates put in $20k into a horse, which trialled once and they said we should give it away. So we bought it to Adelaide, still might not start, but at least the trainer is a quality bloke who will tell us the truth. Hopefully just takes it to the track so we can all go and get trashed.

Thanks HK. We can't pit our trainer, he's been great and owned about 50% in the horse as well.

Best of luck with yours though. Obviously you'll keep us updated with progress. I'll be watching with envy :-(

I should add, it's not the end of the road for us, our syndicate is going along ok and we'll be in the market for another horse shortly.

Just on that, does anyone know about broodmares? Our nag (I can affectionately call her that now) is up to be sold as a broodmare but I would've thought that her affliction would've turned breeders away from breeding with her?

No chance of getting surgery? I believe So You Think had similar problem. It's a paralisation of a muscle in the throat that opens and closes to let air through. When is paralysed it doesn't open. They surgery permanently opens the muscle/flap. Doesn't work for all horses but there are different levels of paralisation. As for breeding I believe it's highly likely it's hereditory
