People go on saying oh accidents happen on a sporting field and throw examples of players who have been injured

That's fair enough

Big difference though is those sportspeople choose to put themselves in sports which involve contact

Horses don't get the choice of what they want to do!

A horse weighs 500kg if it dont wanna run let alone jump then they wont.

watch a hurdle race and if there is a riderless horse they generally go around and complete the course with the other runners

And a very high percentage of race-horses (as I understand, admittedly Im far from an expert on such things so happy to be corrected) only exist because they were created for racing. So they either take their chances of getting through a racing career unscathed before heading to stud/paddock/farm for retirement (where they could still break a leg anyway) or they just don't exist to begin with.
