Hypothetically you are on the Melbourne FC interview panel for appointing the next Coach and you have Sheeds due in next. What do you ask him?

Here is my question.

On Sunday you coached your last Essendon game in Melbourne after 27 years at the helm. It was also James Hird's last game in Melbourne. 90,000 people went and as the Essendon coach, your team lost the game - a genuine milestone game - to a team well behind you on the ladder. So after losing in a milestone game as big as that game was, how do you motivate your players to win this week in Perth?

And what would a good answer be?

I wouldn't ask him any questions.

He can coach, no doubt.

But after 27 years as a senior coach (on the back of his 12(?) year playing career), I reckon any club looking for a long term coach needs to look elsewhere.

The question I'd be most interested about would be what he can do for Melbourne off the field.

I think Melbourne could have a lot to gain from appointing him for 2-3 years and then moving on to another coach if Sheedy has had enough. Sheedy says it like it is and has vision that not many others have and Melbourne would be hoping if they appoint him he can attract supporters and turn the football department around. If they pick Sheedy as coach, they will get a lot more than just him being coach.

agree with everything you say Aerie it would be a good decision for both on and off the field for Melbourne if they appoint Sheeds.

Which is exactly why Freo have dangled a "Football Manager" offer in front of him similar to the English Premier League. Would have responsibilities on and off field rather than just solely as a coach.

As for the answer to my own question - I'm stumped!

Melbourne would be crazy not to appoint Sheedy, he may well only serve a two year contract at the club, yet he can also blood his replacement at the same time. Sheedy is an experienced coach who has taken Essendon to the finals many times, there is no reason that he cant take Melbourne to the finals in the same fashion, he clearly has the wish and the desire to do so.

bit like barrasi at sydney there for a few years and the havnt looked back ...eade built the foundation and roos took it to the next level ...
