Why Geelong should win the flag..

Postby Dutchy » Thu Aug 16, 2007 2:57 pm

Looking thru my stats this arvo and had a close look at Geelongs last 14 wins, we all know they have been playing well but some great stats -

In the 14 wins -
>On average have conceeded 65 points, against AFL average of 95
>Only 1 team has scored more than 70 points against them (Essendon scored 83)
>Are averaging 117 points for
>Average winning margin of 42 points
>Average 13 more scoring shots per match
>Average 10 more Inside 50's per match
>beaten the Bookies start in all 14 games

All things being equal this team has everything a premiership team needs, strong defence, gun midfield, can score when needed and few injuries...not too mention they are due!!!!

My money will be on them

Lies, damned lies and statistics...

On current form they should win the GF by a mile.

I doubt they will though... Once their fate is on the line playing finals, nerves will come in to play and I think they'll crumble. Hope they don't 'cause I'd like to see them get the job done...

who is going to beat them then?

I cant make a case for anyone except Sydney in their prime but Im unsure if they are going to be in their prime this September

WCE...maybe, but their form has been patchy at best
Hawks - No....will find it tough in Sept
Roos - No, Prelim at best
Collingwood - fading badly
Port - Nup, will struggle in the real stuff
Brisbane - see Port

Dutchy, I agree...
I think alot of people hark back to the Cats in the late 80's early 90's and the way they lost a few GF's.
What people seem to forget is although Geelong were a great team, there were better teams the years
they lost eg Hawthorn 89, WCE 92,94 & Carlton 95.

Geelong are a class above EVERY other team this year and SHOULD win the flag...
The joy of being on the hill drinking beer cannot be understated

Whilst not hitting the heights (yet) of recent seasons, I think the Eagles and Swans, to my mind anyway are right up there, as they are proven September performers.

All teams playing at the highest level, I can see Geelong beating Sydney, but Im not so sure about West Coast.

My preference would be for the Cats to win it though, so I hope they do, but I would think the Eagles are still right up there.

I think what happened in the lates 80s and early 90s is completely irrelevant to what might happen this year

Geelong have a completely different palying group and Blighty is on record as saying he felt his Geelong team would never win a flag because of individual players in the team going missing on the big day

I can't make a good case for anyone beating the Cats and I reckon a Cats flag would be great actually!

I think Hawthorn have a good chance, have a lot of ball winners, one or two super stars and a tall forward line.
They accounted for geelong already this year, they'll know that.
I think they've got the youth, speed and attacking prowess to do it.
Kangaroos i never write off.
They're a ridiculous team on paper, but be f****d they all do their part.

NFI who is going to Beat them BUT didn't Nth Melbourne and St.Kilda have similar winning streaks going into the GF of '97 and '98 only to fall over to a team that had average form going into the Finals?
Also last year the Cows, oops, i mean Crows were one of the shortest price favourites to win the Flag about 5 - 6 weeks B4 the Finals only to Fall over to injuries. Form can turn very Quickly and whilst punters that took the Big odds earlier in the season, the $2.45 is No value Now the way the finals stucture is set up.

Don't forget this time last year the crows were clear flag favourites and failed to make the GF. A lot can change in the next few weeks.

But my money is on the cats.

I cant see anyone beating geelong either for the gf.
But it was more than a victory for Greece. It was a stirring example to free people throughout the world of what a few brave men can accomplish once they refuse to submit to tyranny.

Because they are hurting from 2005 and a poor season in 2006. I don't think the pressure of being in a one team town will affect the cats at all. You play football to win premierships and Geelong knows that they are due.

Wow, two times today I have found myself partially agreeing with what you have said Dutchy!

Unfortunately I think the Eagles will do the job again this year. They are a side which steps up even further in finals and that's where experience counts. Hope you're right re Geelong though...
