Is the nab Cup necessary?

Postby Benchwarmer » Wed Aug 15, 2007 12:10 pm

Do we really need a pre-season competition?
Would it be smarter just to start the season earlier and try and ensure that the draw is made fairer?
Is it fine as it is and allow the AFL to guinea-pig new ideas?
Or do you love footy so much you don't care what format is used as long as your team is playing?

Must admit I do like it but I would prefer one or 2 trials and straight into the season.
Not sure if the clubs would though but if everyone has the same amount of trials I don't see what the issue is.

I say scrap it and add at least 2 more games to the season to even up the draw some more - at least then clubs would play 8 teams twice and 8 once

Won't happen tho! It's too much of a money spinner (TV & sponsorship) for the AFL to let go

I reckon they should scrap it completely.

I think Hondo's idea has merit. The reason why is because the season would be far too long if we had each team playing each team twice (once home and once away) but it would be much fairer.

Good idea, can go with the 2 conferences idea so you play every team in your conference twice and the other conference once that way too, be a lot fairer than now.

wont happen until the TV rights are up again, the AFL could demand more $$$ with a longer proper season....I dont mind it but would love a 30 game season with everyone playing each other twice, I think you would have to shorten the games though, maybe 15 mins plus time on for each 1/4 as a trade off for the players welfare

I think Australians in general have a hatred of the word 'conference', and besides there are 10 Victorian clubs so at least two will get the hump straight away.

What they don't do now to make it fair is to ensure that the previous season's top eight sides play each other twice and the rest once the following year, whilst the bottom eight play each other twice and the rest once.

By doing that instead of manufacturing blockbusters to maximise revenue (it is a game still despite the serious business overtones) would make it fairer for Carlton and Richmond against the other sides that the League forces them to play twice.

The big issue is Collingwood ... they might tank a 9th place finish to avoid a trip to the Eagles, Sydney, Port and potentially Adelaide and Brisbane and instead opt for a trip to Freo!!!

I suppose 24 rounds makes the draw out of kilter with alignments (guys - 2 pools of 8 means 7+7+8=22 matches, not 8+8+8=24! ... it took me a minute to work that out too!) but then a general bye twice during the season allowing for the promotio of the SANFL, WAFL, etc. twice a year wouldn't be a particularly bad thing.

I seem to think our game goes too long anyway and if you reduced it there would be significantly less injuries and players could play longer and we wouldnt see as many ordinary players get AFL games...go to a soccer or Rugby game and they are over beofre you know it!!

I voted we need a pre-season comp but 2 games- highest amount of goals wins cup/$$$.
Each team plays each other twice during regular season with maybe two mid season breaks.

My maths was out :D

Yes, current system = each team plays 8 teams once and 7 twice

So 24 rounds would = play 6 teams once and 9 twice
