What to do?

If you at this point in time had a position as an AFL assistant coach, which of the 4 jobs would you think are the most likely to be:

1st: The one you would most likely get.
2nd: The club most likely to be successful in the next 4-6 years.
3rd: Or do you apply for all and hope something comes up?

I would go for Fremantle. They have a poor culture and have had no success, nothing to lose!

I'd go to whichever club was stupid enough to give me a 5 year contract aka Richmond with Wallace

Carlton is one of teh better places because their list is so raw (all teh best plaeyrs have been there lest than two year, there are no expectations for success for another 2-3 years...

I would also visit the clubs and assess the facilities, the culture, who I'd be working with, etc.

Then you'd have to look at the $$ involved naturally and length of contract.

Then it would depend on who offered me a job! :D

There's arguments that all 4 teams have potential on their playing list with Carlton perhaps being 1-2 years behind the other three. I'd go for Freo too - that would be a good challenge to correct the culture and get the most out of team with potential.

it would have to be Essendon as they don't like to be unsuccessful for to long and I would think they would have the best off field administration compared to the others

A bit biased BUT...I'd go Carlton.
Young list especially when Kouta retires.
The facilities are getting upgraded, to be shared by the Storm (NRL), Carlton and the Vic Instsitue of sport...
A good board with lots of $$$ behind them...
A good supporter base, with a great location and excellent oval.

I rekon Mark Harvey has the toughest decision to make.

If he does well over the last 6 weeks of the season he will definately have @ least 2 clubs chasin him in Essendon and Fremantle - probably not such a bad situation for him really.

I would like to welcome home Neale Daniher to Essendon

Is Daniher really that good a coach?

Yes I question that too

He and Connolly are assumed to be candidates for another job yet they had 10 and 6 year stints at their old clubs with 1 GF appearance between them and a handful of wins in finals

Look at Hawthorn, Kangaroos and Geelong who went with 1st-time, young coaches - saved some $$ and got good coaches out of it

I would think that Neale Daniher would have a much better record if he had been coaching elsewhere rather than with melbourne over the last ten years. He didn't do too bad with Melbourne considering the problems the club has had over the years. The list he has had hasn't been the best but he got more out of them than I reckon a few other so called top coaches would've.

I would say Daniher over Harvey. Daniher seems to have more going for him than Mark. Yet Essendon did go with Sheeds so I dunno we must wait and see what the silly season brings

He would be crazy not to choose Essendon!

Freo have significant problems with a losing culture which makes the coaching job a poisoned chalice for the next bloke. Essendon have way fewer stumbling blocks towards being successfull.

For anything over $200,000 a year for 2 years I'll coach anyone, and they can sack me and pay me out anytime they like, and blame me for all the disasters. I never really played much footy, but I've played lots of other sports and know a bit about motivation technique, and I am really good at wearing the blame, without spitting the dummy. What do you think Carlton?
