Sheedy sacked!

Breaking news just announced on 5AA that Kevin Sheedy has been sacked after 27 yrs. It didn't say whether he is finishing the season out or going immediately.

everybody talks about player loyalty these days, goes to show it works both ways, thought youd give someone a bit more respect after 27 years

just need the kangas to re-sign laidley, plenty of options now

Press conference to announce this still to be held.

But AAP reports:

AFL: Sheedy sacked by Essendon-3
AFL Bombers 3 Melbourne
If Sheedy chooses to stand aside straight away, he will have
coached Essendon in 629 matches.
That puts him second on the alltime list behind Collingwood
legend Jock McHale, who coached the Magpies 714 times from 1912-49.
Sheedy made his name as a player at Richmond, representing the
Tigers in 251 games from 1967-79, including three premierships.
He replaced Barry Davis as Essendon coach in 1981 and led the
Bombers to four premierships in 1984, 1985, 1993 and 2000.

Seems unreal 1/4 of the AFL coaches are gone already!

Nice headline, BPBRB! My mail tells me his contract will not be renewed for next season and that he will coach out the season.

The first game of VFL I watched was the 83 GF - the day I started following the Bombers (because I thought Hawthorn looked gay). He was already 3 years into his coaching stint at that stage!

Hopefully he finds some ambassador role with the AFL instead of coaching elsewhere.

Smac - that's the first VFL game I ever watched too.
I think my team got knocked out the week before.

Would Richmond consider giving Wallace the flick for Sheeds?

Would have to pay him out for 2 years.

IMO, Mark Harvey or Gary O'Donnell would be the front runners for 2008. Essendon have always expressed a desire for a Bomber-bred coach to succeed Sheedy and they'll move heaven and earth to get Harvey.

Yes I reckon they'd consider it

John Ilhan (Crazy John's CEO and VERY wealthy guy) comes on to the Richmond Board next year I think

Even so, 2 years is a lot of money to cough up for nothing

Interesting pressure on Freo now then isn't there?
They're going to have to try their darndest to hold onto Harvey - as Essendon is obviously his dream job.

I think this would be a very good idea. Wallace should never have been appointed in the first place.

I find it hilarious that 4 Coachs have been given the flick yet the side sitting bottom with 1 and a half wins and the poorest recruiting in recent years and their coachs name is yet to be even mentioned to hit the block.

Will Gary Ayres be care taker coach for rest of season?

This is complete bullshit Essendon, Sheeds is a living legend of your club and IMO one of best 2/3 coaches going around.

I think Harvey went to Freo to gain experience from outside his Essendon culture - Probably why he also took so long to say yes IMO !!!
