Geelong Minor Premier?

Postby Wedgie » Sun Jul 22, 2007 11:53 pm

Serious question, when was the last time Geelong were the minor premier in the AFL/VFL?

I know they've been accused of choking over the years but they always seem to have got beaten by a club higher than them in the ladder in GFs I think?

I think you're right, from memory 3 teams finished on 16 wins and Geelong were the only team out of those 3 to make the GF!

McClelland trophy has only been awarded to the minor premier since 1990 or 91 i think. Before that it was done similar to the Stanley H Lewis trophy. Came in in the early 1950's i think.

West Coast didn't finish in the top 3? They were ready to win one though after being the best team in 91 but losing to a finals hardened and very experienced Hawthorn side.

Nah, I just looked it up:

1. Geelong 16 wins
2. Footscray 16 wins
3. Collingwood 16 wins
4. West Coast 15 wins
5. Hawthorn 14 wins
6. St Kilda 14 wins

(out of the finals)

7. Carlton 14 wins

Finals wen this way:

Elim: St Kilda D Collingwood (Waverley)
Elim: West Coast D Hawthorn (Subiaco)
Qual: Geelong D Footscray (MCG)

Semi: Footscray D St Kilda (Waverley)
Semi: West Coast D Geelong (MCG)

Prelim: Geelong D Footscray (MCG)

GF: West Coast D Geelong (MCG)

Geelong actually got 10 pts closer in the GF than what they did in the Semi.

Nice finals series when the 4th side out of 6 can have a home game and a week off before the GF! :?

I think they were also Minor Premier in 1980 or 81 and got knocked out in straight sets.

Edit: It was 1980.

They have finished 1st after the minor round in 1897, 1901, 1925, 1931, 1937, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1980 and 1992.

Prior to it being awarded to the Minor Premier (1991 onwards) it was awarded to the team who had scored the most points for over the three grades.
