Should the Kanga's resign Laidley

Postby sydney-dog » Sun Jul 08, 2007 11:05 pm

I find it interesting that the Kanga's will not enter contract renewal discussions with Laidley until the season's end

Yes, their is still 8 rounds to play and anything can happen, however most media experts and the majority of the football public predicted the Kanga's to finish bottom 2 this year, especially after Thompson was injured

The Kanga's are now 9 wins and 5 losses,
2 of those losses have come against last years top 4 sides in Eagles and the Eagles, while 2 loses have been against current top 4 sides in Collingwood and Hawthorn, lets also remember the Crows are the only top 8 side to beat the Hawks, and the Kanga's have also been one of the only successful teams to beat Geelong, this was at skilled stadium..

My view, this is a remarkable effort given the young list

My question, should the club be proactive in resigning Laidley now, I think they should and the more wins the Kanga's notch up the more the media will ask why not, this may become a major distraction in the run to the finals

I can't help thinking that their is something else in between the lines here

think he will be signed up, he aint going anywhere else so I dont see the rush, on field performace was always going to determine his fate and there is still plenty of footy to be played.......only 2 coaches in the past 15 seasons, we dont shoot our own

It comes back to the old scenario of who is it that they are going to find that is better than he is to replace him with? North stuck with him after last season and he seems to have done well so far, his side being a definate chance of playing finals footy this year.

Suppose at the end of this year, Leigh Matthews is available because he wants to return to Melbourne, North then have to make a call, do they think that Matthews would be a better return for their investment, do they chase Matthews or do they take a punt on Laidley improving the team further?

By waiting until the end of the year to make the contract, they have more options then open, they get to look at Laidleys record and make a call on whether they think he will improve on it next year, they also have the opportunity to make "unofficial" approaches to potential candidates to sound them out to see if a change is likely.

Most likely going on current form they will re-sign Laidley. I cant see them going into a bidding war for a Matthews when it is uncertain at best at what he might bring to the club better than what Laidley can. Pagan the old school big name coach was paid massive $$$ to go to Carlton, then had to take a mandatory pay cut and has had limited success since. Which is probably not what the boards of the club have had in mind!

Dutchy, I think the club should be pro-active and sign him now, this show of loyalty could have a positive impact on the playing group, otherwise this issue will continue to hang over the clubs head, the club should show some leadership here

It seems to me the club is having an each way bet, after this years performance I would not make the assumption he would not be a target for other clubs
