does anyone here know how to get into being a Sports Agent? i found a program that is ran by Ricky Nixon's "Flying Start" company, they offer a course, but says nothing about where you go from there. At the completion of the course, which costs $1200, you dont get any qualifications, all you get is a certificate to say that you completed a course.

Nice little earner for Ricky, but gives you nothing. Mind you if he ran up a certificate, that would mean nothing too. I'm sure one of the minor Universities will run up a meaningless Bachelor of Sporting Agency one day too, if they think it will pay.

Like most things what you need is not a bit of paper, but to persuade someone to give you a go, then prove you can do it. You don't need a degree to be able to do things like "Interior Design" either, just a good eye, and good judgement of what is becoming fashionable - you don't even need good taste - in some eras that would have been a disadvantage.

It truly is a case of who you know not what you know in the player agent area - you would get more for your $1200 if you went down to the track and backed a horse called shafted !!!

yeah, i understand the whole "it's who ya know, not what ya know". i used to be mates with a player for Port Power, but have lost contact with him in the last year or so. so i now "know" nobody!

Its my understanding (i.e. I could be wrong) that all player agents have to accredited with the AFL. So if you want to be an agent I'd start with them. That might even have criteria (that Nixon's course may cover) you have to meet / abide by so your customers (the players) know they can expect from thier "managers".
