Talk on the national game

Marty Mattner

Postby Blue Boy » Sat Jul 07, 2007 11:59 am

Last night on radio Crows assistant coach D.Noble explained that the club believed that Marty's form down back had been patchy @ best in which I agree with.

But he also went on to say that he should be able to play on a tall and also be able to play on a small as a defender and that the back group of the club felt that he has not been able to do this so he has been left out of the side.

So what I dont agree with is that they are playing him as a defender. He is a wingman FFS. He also will not be able to find any form either as Sturt have the bye this week.

Match ups can be crucial to a team winning or losing - The crows coaching staff have got this match up wrong and sadly Marty has paid the price.

He's in my Dreamteam ... sh!t, I was annoyed that he was dropped.
I must admit he's been a bit up and down.

If you want to go quickly, go alone.

I think the days of saying someone is playing 'wing' are long gone the same as a 'rover'. Wingman are just another part of the defensive crew these days aren't they?

Dutchy

Agree this year the crows are not scoring as heavily as we would like, but I believe having continuity of players available will be the key to turning this around

However, let's put your comment in greater perspective, since Craigy has been at the club, the crows have in that period been 2005 and 2007 YTD scored more heavily than your Kangaroo's

2005
Crows 2070 pts
Kanga's 2053 pts

2006
Crows 2257 pts
Kanga's 1754 pts

2007
Kanga's 1212
Crows 1063

Total
Crows 5393 pts
Kanga's 5019 pts

This year the Kanga's have scored 11 pts more than the crows per game, this is one goal more in each half of football played this year

In 2005 the crows scored 21 pts per game more than the Kangaroo's, almost 2 goals per half than the Roo's

People seem to make long term statements on short term observations. However stats show, certainly last years the crows blitz the Kanga's in attacking footy and this year their is only 11 pts per game between both clubs, only couple straight kicks really

In specific to Mattner

Marty needs to have the flexibility to play Wing, HB on talls or on smalls

most importantly, he needs to improve his decision making, his execution and look up not at the ground when he runs with the footy, I lose count how many times he gets himself in trouble because he is looking at the ground when he runs

however, I also believe Torney's skills are the worse of any player at the club, time and time again when Torney is in space with time he misses targets and puts his team mates under all sorts of pressure

I never said that the Kangas game plan of the last 2 years was any good...big difference

When Craig constantly talks about defensive structure and plays with a 2 man forwardline I dont think my comment is incorrect

11 ppg over the whole season is a huge difference SD, so far thats 25 goals more in the season....add to that that the Roos havent beatne a team by more than 26 points (no blowouts)....while we are talking stats the Roos average 4 more socring shots per game this season

If the Crows kick over 100 points tonight I retract my statement

Times anything x 22 rounds you will end up with a big number. 11ppg is hardly anything to make big statements about. 1 scoring shot per quarter extra and you are hanging your hat on that?

2 weeks ago ... Adel 15.10 (100) vs Kangaroos 7.12 (54) .... enough said

Dutchy,

I have never seen the crows set up with a two man forward line

yes at times the crows have put numbers behind the ball at a certain stage of the game but I wish people stop believing the crows are the only club that do this

Kanga's, Richmond, WB and Essendon basically founded this tactic

I have seen every club at some stage in some games apply this tactic

My comment relates to the Crows who I believe Mattner plays for...and the initial comment was regarding him being a defender...very much on topic

I thought the purpose of this forum was to debate on all clubs and footy issues

when developing you position, at times you need to broaden the argument

surely, we are not going to so restrictive, one thread per club per topic, we would have 1000 threads per week

Dutchy my friend, I think you are the Master of Deflection, as you have tried to do on this occassion

i think its brilliant, DUTCHY makes an observation, points it out, and i think his point is quite valid, the crows start the attack from defence. the crows would be good at rugby!

anyway, how is it that when an opposition supporter makes an observation and comment it is then 'their' team that comes under attack.

it would be good to see sides like the crows just open up the flood gates and do the G. Bush and ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK
Matty Wade is a star and deserves more respect from the forum family!

Come on .... go back and look at the comment that started this .... even Dutchy would have to admit it was far more than a simple 'observation' ... I think it was more like Kangaroos on the attack and the Crows defence digging in :)

Bays fans sticking together  :)

Dutchy

no need for a poll, I conceed,

I would hope every player is drilled on the defensive side of the game, Footy is about two way run and both a defensive and offensive action
