West Coast Eagles heritage guernsey

Postby westozfalcon » Thu Jul 05, 2007 5:07 pm

I don't like the idea of the Eagles wearing a replica of the original WA State of Origin jumper.

State jumpers are special and should not be paraded around flippantly. They have to be earnt. Also in the case of State of Origin jumpers they should only be worn by players from the home state!

Also the irony is the Eagles did as much as anyone to bring about the demise of Origin footy with their reluctance to make players available to play in it and now they want to celebrate the concept. :?

Maybe they should stop Heritage Round for all the problems it seems to create when the clubs with no heritage before the expanded-AFL (except Port in SANFL) try to come up with guernseys that they never wore in the past era when they never existed. If you get what I mean.

Alternatively, maybe us supporters are making it harder than it needs to be :D ? Refer similar thread re Port's heritage guernsey

I would have bought a WA (WCE "heritage") jumper but they were $105 for an SGIO advert! A bit less subtle and they may have had a sale.

As an East Fremantle supporter, I looked at the Dockers heritage jumper with a potential interest to buying it and again, the blue and white was alright, but unfortunately there were LG ads all over the back and worse still, no EFFC logo in the white panel , After all, it was openly stated that it was a 1970s East Fremantle jumper! The early years (South) Freo got their 19th century jumper as it originally was in past HR's.

Heritage round, as has been mentioned before, has passed it's use by date. Just like short chip kicks, defensive football and Rex Hunt.

I agree with the Sandgroper. The West Coast Eagles perhaps could have worn the WA colours with the Eagle jumper design to illustrate the link between the past, present and future, but not the WA jumper for the reasons stated above.

I think that Heritage Round should be held, yet it should be by voluntary participation by the respective clubs.

Clubs that have a long history and have worn different designs of jumpers in their past should be able to wear them again in recognition of the heritage of their club. The South Adelaide Heritage Guernsey looked awesome this year, and Centrals 1970's Guernsey is a favourite of many. If wearing those guernseys helps the club to revenue all the better!

The Crows on the other hand have a problem, West Coast at least have their first AFL Gurnsey, the Crows have not as yet had a change of Guernsey design.

What I think that the Crows should do, is to wear the Heritage Guernsey of the Adelaide Football Club that existed in the SANFL in the begining. Considering that the club is no more it would be a good opportunity to have the history of the club in the SANFL recognised.

How about the Crows wear the guernsey of the team which dominated the SANFL in the AFL chosen decade. Can you imagine the Crows wearing a Sturt jumper or dare I say it a Port Magpies Guernsey.

I think that's the best option next time. It's not a technicolour blur, it doesn't have the same ring to it as Hasbeen suggested - I don't think one SANFL club deserves its' jumper in the AFL for the Crows, and it's not a State guernsey, something I don't agree to either. That should be left to State matches.

Colours were black, red and white, but I don't have a picture of it.

I'd projectile vomit if the Crows wore a Sturt guernsey.

The WA guernsey issue has made a lot of people upset over here. The heritage round should be put on the shelf, it was fine during the centenary of the VFL/AFL but it's becoming a farce.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

This is all the info that Wikipedia have, if you click on the Historical link for the original Adelaide Football Club you get the Wikipedia Crows site.

--------------------------------------------------------

Former clubs

In the period 1877 to 1886 South Park, Willunga, North Adelaide (the original club of that name, not the current North Adelaide), Prince Alfred College, Gawler, Kapunda, Bankers, Woodville, and Victorian all left the Association. A brief profile of some of these clubs follows:

Adelaide (the original club) - formed in 1860; disbanded in 1873; reformed in 1876; merged with Kensington in 1881; disbanded in 1882; reformed and merged with North Park in 1885. Their colours were black, red and white and they were premiers in the SAFA (forerunner of the SANFL) in 1886.

Far be it from me to comment on matters AFL, but...

If the PAP smears can celebrate their heritage by wearing an old Magpies guernsey, I see no reason that the Clowns shouldn't wear a state guernsey. PAP was born of the Magpies (and the SANFL), the Clowns were born of the SANFL.

BUT - and I mean BUT - let it be an OLD state jumper. The current state jumper is sacrosanct and must not be sullied by any other team. However there are plenty of old SA jumpers which could be worn. A good choice for a 70s or 80s themed round would have been the "panelled" state jumper worn in this era.

And while I do not give a squat about either Port team or the feeble attempts to pass off the PAPs as the original Port, if I was a Magpies fan (god forbid) then I'd be more than upset to see the PAPsters in the prison bars. Admittedly it's difficult to make a case for any other heritage design given that the round was given a '70s theme, but there are plenty of other old designs worn by the Magpies. Heck, the PAPs might even lay claim to the old black-and-white state jumper. Former Port historian John Wood (RIP) once wrote that a case could be made that Port nicked its black and white colours from the then state colours in the first place.
