Tackling and hit out records

Geelong and Brisbane had 224 tackles between them yesterday. 113 to Geelong, 111 to Brisbane.

That breaks the combined record and the club record, in fact both teams did. Geelong had 100 tackles in Round 20 2004, and Fremantle had 98 in the same match.

Both teams had 113 hit outs between them - an AFL record, 101 occured twice before.

Good stuff! I looked through the players tackling stats and there were some huge numbers! Bartel, Corey, Rischitelli, Selwood x2, Chapman ect, ect all had some decent totals.

It's no accident Geelong are doing well at the moment, I think they are one of the hardest working teams in the comp. We get distracted by the goal-scoring sometimes and forget just how HARD those guys are working.

That was one tough match at Cat Park on Sunday. Brisbane came to play for the first time in weeks and credit must go to the Catter defence for keeping them goaless for a whole half..a half in which the Lions had the better of Geelong in the clearances.

In the wet, you'd expect tackling numbers to be up. This type of 'in close' game appeared to take its toll on some of the younger Lions which allowed the Cats to run over the top of them in the end.

I think last year has hurt the current playing group than anything else. They seem to be hungrier and more committed than ever before.

I can't say unfortuantely. I know that the Sydney/Adelaide game at SCG in 2004 had over 100 stoppages, but that includes both ball ups and throw ins.
