Great game in 89 but no luck. 92 and 94, those damn eagles!! 95, blues have done us like a dinner. Maybe Geelong wont ever win a(nother) premiership ever. But hey if Port can win a premiership within 8 years of formation (with the worst recruiting concessions ever), then maybe the Cats can....but then again......nah i dont think they will!!!!

As long as Grant Thomas is coach of St Kilda, Geelong have only got 14 teams to worry about for the flag.

Hehe, shall we add Chris Connolly to that list as well.

What a fantastic post GWW NOT. You could have posted this 5hit ten years ago when it was relevant, what happened in the Blight era has no relevance to the current Geelong team. Even now Geelong are recruiting young and developing for the future so we will be 'in the hunt' for a long time to come.
Another thing about the Blight era. We only finished top once during that time and led the grand final of that year (92) by five goals. It was the one Granny we actually choked in but a bloke called Peter Matera had a little something to do with that. In 89, 94 and 95 we faced fearsome combinations that were not only better than Geelong, but a fair bit better than every other side in the comp also. Perhaps in 94 North Melbourne were the more deserving finalist but Geelong got over the line (something Geelong never got any credit for is how we somehow made that 94 Granny with injuries to Couch, Hocking, Mansfield and Bairstow. We didn't have any shots left for the all conquering Eagles).
I would have loved to play against the Cows or St Kilda in 97 but the AFL dudded us that year and our reward for finishing second that season was a night final against North (gee thanks) and an AWAY game against the Cows even though we finished above them on the ladder. The Cows wouldn't have won jack shit with our current finals format.
I'm not sure if you are a Cats fan, but if you are, you sound like you are about to jump off. Will we ever win another flag?? Not with that bloody attitude champ! Last season we were one second away from last year's premier on thier deck when they were at full strength and we had plenty out and no ruckmen left standing. The Cats biggest problem for 2006 is the poor fitness record of Ottens and King. If these two stay sound for the whole season, then Geelong will win the flag. It's all about injuries these days. Are Sydney really the best side in the comp? No, they were merely the healthiest.

REB

Would have thought this season would be their best chance in a while given there is no standout heavyweight ... Have the defence and midfield to make it happen and their once-were kids have now seen enough September action to be finals hardened .. I think they're as good a chance as anyone in 06!

Well here's the pattern set by the Swans:
2003- preliminary final
2004- second week exit
2005- PREMIERS
Geelong on the other hand:
2004- preliminary final
2005- second week exit
2006- ????
That should be enough to give Cats fans some genuine optimism methinks!

Hey REB
As a paid up and proud Crows member I thought it was a mark by Colbert in the 1997 semi final too and yep you got the rough end of the pineapple regarding having to play the final at Footy Park and not at the cattery.
Oh well, Adelaide Crows 1997 and 1998 world Champions...

Yep. I can whinge and say what I like but the 'book' says that the Cows won the flag. No one can take that away from yous..but I'm still holding out for the retrospective 95 flag to be taken off those salary cap cheating Blues LOL.

Nup we'll never win one in my lifetime, I still enjoy the ride as it gives me a small insight in to what makes the 6 or 7 South supporters tick.

I believe they can win one. I dont really think for them that the window is closing at all. As they have plenty of youth. They have a good squad, not sure about Ottens yet. But they have the ablilty to achieve this. I was actually expecting a better performance from them this year. But perhaps next year might be there year.

One thing about Geelong is they need to improve their injuries, this used to be looked upon as luck but I think Craig's knowledge in the fitness area is one of the reasons the Crows have had an outstanding record with injuries, the Cats seem to get a lot of soft tissue injuries so I'm concerned that they need some new personnel in that area.

Nope i'm actually a Port supporter, i put this thread in to keep things in perspective after your previous one on here. You were bagging Port, i just thought you should give a bit of credit to the club and not slag them off because they've lost a few players.

Hmm yeah good point, but i think the crows still had a bit of luck in this area. I reckon that next season they wont be as lucky.

Well the Cats have been unlucky:
1989 - Played an awesome hawks side who were at the peek of their power, although the margin was close the cats played catch up for most of the afternoon, Ablett almost single handly won the game.
1992 - The real one that got away, having that handy lead but Matera rose to the top.
1993 - No one really remembers how hot the Cats were at the end of that season, they beat the Eagles over there in the last minor round game and if the Crows had of lost would have got into the 6. Who knows what they may have done if they got in because it was an open season.
1994 - By the time they reached that GF the batteries were very low. The Eagles were awesome that year and they really gave them a belting.
1995 - Cleary the 2nd best team and they beat my Tigers by about 15 goals in the prelimanry to get to the GF. Came up against a Carlton side which seemed so balanced with a combo of youth and experience.
1997 - As mentioned Colberts mark cost them but letting Carey kick 7 on that wet Sunday night really killed them.
2004 - Just beaten by the Lions on the Saturday night, who knows what may hae been if they had got up.
2005 - Everyone raves about the Swans flag but gee the Cats did everything but win that night in the semi final.
So its an up and down team to follow for you Cat fans, but supporting Richmond Id just like to make the finals!!
I reckon they will win one before the end of the decade.

And how is 'has Port effectively replaced these players, I think not' slagging off the Power geniear5e?

Like I said, good post
NOT. If there's even a hint of Power bagging then Booney would be on me like a shot, perspective is something you sorely need, Why TF should I be giving credit to the Power?? FFS!!

Agree 100%.
The Cats were flying at the end of '93.
Still think it was their best chance of the Blight era.
Then again, if they hadn't played the man for the first quarter and a bit in the '89 GF, who knows?
Another one of those if, but, maybe...shoulda, coulda, woulda...but didn't scenarios.

It'll be interesting, I used to think it boiled down to luck but as I said I'm starting to wonder if it has more to do with the way different clubs look after their players now.
