West Coast defender Shannon Hurn has earned the round 11 nomination for the AFL Rising Star award.

Hurn, 19, continued an impressive season by gathering 19 possessions and kicking a goal while opposed to Essendon speedster Alwyn Davey last Friday.
Hurn made his senior debut midway through 2006 and has held his spot in the strong Eagles' line-up for every game this season.

He was selected by West Coast with the No.13 pick in the 2005 national draft.

By that stage he had already enjoyed senior premiership success in the South Australian National Football League with Central Districts in 2004 and 2005.

Hurn is also a talented cricketer who was chosen in the Redbacks' squad before being drafted by the Eagles.

His grandfather played cricket for South Australia, while his father played more than 100 SANFL games for Central District.

On this West Coast must be congratulated for once again for snaffling an outstanding SA player from underneath our noses.

They did have a pick before the crows so there was no way we could of drafted him any way. But the West Coast had played in the Grand Final and had traded for a higher pick and once again we were trumped.

Sorry about the rant - seein this just made me more frustrated.

Pfeiffer pick 17 Adeliade - which we got for Fergus Watts from St Kilda

Douglas may be the trump in all this - but if he turns out to be a 100 game player whats the chance he goes home to a Victorian club when he starts to get a regular gig.

I would be stoked - I would also take Waters or Butler ( also both Norwich Rising Star nominees )

But then they will probably end up @ Port as no one will do a deal with the Crows or the Crows will just sit on there hands !!!

Fantasia has since come out and said the Crows would of drafted Hurn if he was still available, my understanding is Hurn is out of contract at the end of the year, I would love to see him in a Crows jumper

Douglas, good judges believe he can be a future leader of the club, my view, he needs another pre-season under his belt before he has the strength to play consistently at AFL level, their will always be that risk of wanting to return home.

Pfeiffer, he is highly rated at the Crows, unfortunately he has had a horrible run with injuries and illness, I am looking forward to seeing the kid get a good run with his fitness so we can see what he is capable of, my view, he may be the wild card on the list, he just needs some luck

Blue-boy, you will tie yourself in knots going over past drafts picking over players the Crows missed or could have picked. It's very easy in hindsight. Every club has a similar story in drafts and every draft has a 'sleeper' that comes in around No 60 and becomes a first-choice player a la Johncock ... Daniel Kerr was pick 20 (or so) so everyone passed him over, once.

Given that 4-5 of the last 3 years' drafts picks are playing regularly for the Crows I'm happy with what's going on down there.

I love Shannon Hurn as a footballer - he's a real beauty. Tough blokes who can kick properly are always at a premium. Was at the Dome for that match and he certainly did catch the eye, as he did against the Kangaroos the week before.

Whenever I hear the name Shannon Hurn it brings back horrible memories of that 240m goal he kicked in the 2005 GF. That was probably the most important goal of the match and a real lifter for Central in what was up till then a close game.

Any bloke that's already a veteran of A Grade premierships in both cricket and footy before he even gets drafted is something special. Good luck to him. Look forward to cheering for him when he pulls on an origin guernsey in years to come.
