Talk on the national game

Statistics

Postby Booney » Thu Jun 07, 2007 2:59 pm

In the modern era football is being played in a different manner, not all of us like it and fair enough too.

A ridiculous amount of stats now grace the pages of out papers and websites every week, but is it time for those stats to reflect the impact that player had on the game?

I get sick of seeing a Bowden,Cornes or Bassett having 25 or more touches and the % rating being in the 80's or higher.

Thoughts?
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

DUTCHY makes $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

FROM STATS.

it is interesting to see how much importance is put on stats these days, whereas in previous eras, stats didnt really matter.

maybe its because it gives people a job

Apparently a few years back an economist-statistician type did a study of all the stats to try to find which was the most important to a team winning ... ie, the best correlation between a winning stat and winning the game over time

Guess what it was ..... knocking the ball forward

Think that says that stats are dangerous to rely on in themselves ...... we are catching up to the Americans tho they have been stats-mad for decades

i remember Rowe a few weeks back saying the first stat that the coaches look at at glenelg is handball receives - because it shows the team is running.

the other stat is hard ball gets - contested possession - allegedly if your team has more then you win!!!!

interesting that in the POrt-geelong game, port had 2 more contested possession yet they lost by 56 points
