South Australian State of Origin Team

PostPosted: Thu May 31, 2007 6:19 pm
by NFC
FF: O’Loughlin, Darcy, Ricciuto
CHF: Didak, Pavlich, Thompson
C: Edwards, S.Burgoyne, Cooney
CHB: Bassett, Cornes, Griffen
FB: Waters, Rutten, Harris
1R: Lade, Cornes, Goodwin
INT: Ottens, Burns, McMahon, Johncock

Thoughts? Does Shaun Burgoyne qualify for SA or Allies? And same question re. Johncock.

Edit: In Johncock and S.Burgoyne.

On current form, I don't think Darcy would be in my team (also have Cooney listed twice).

I think Stiffy and the Burgoynes are from Pt Lincoln and would qualify?

 I have Cooney twice and I don't even rate him.

Yeh Darcy would struggle but who else is there to kick goals? That's our main weakness.

I'm just saying that would be the full strength SA side, assuming all are fit. But I guess I left out Tredders.

This is from the other thread : the Advertisers Phantom SOO team they did at about round 3:

F: B. Ebert, Tredrea (c), O'Loughlin
HF: Edwards, Pavlich, Burton
C: K. Cornes, S. Burgoyne, Cooney
HB: Enright, C. Cornes, Griffen
B: Bassett, Rutten, Johncock
1R: Lade, Goodwin (v/c), Pearce.
Int: Brogan, P. Burgoyne, Thompson, Fisher.
Coach: M. Williams.

Taken from the Advertiser
Roo left out due to injury but would slot in an "ideal world" SA SOO side

Bring in Lade for Ottens as I couldn't give a rats about SOO, I'd rather see the Cats have two fit ruckmen for a change.

Would a current coach be the SOO coach? M. Williams would not be coach, it would end up being John Cahill or god forbid Graham Cornes just to keep it in the family...

When you look at it, its a fairly average looking side, when you compare it to SOO sides of 15-20 years ago

But thats just my opinion...

M.J. Blight. And if Sheedy finishes up at Essendon, he could coach the Vics. Then you would have a VERY marketable game.

I doubt Tredrea's current form and fitness would warrant the spot at FF..... Burton would also need to recover.

FF B.Hall B.Fevola G.Ablett

HF N.Riewoldt J.Brown (VC) P.Chapman

C D.Cross C.Judd (C) N.Dal Santo

HB H.Shaw D.Milburn L.Hodge

FB D.Fletcher M.Scarlett J.Bowden

1R J.White S.Mitchell S.West

Int J.Bartel J.Fraser M.Lloyd H.Scotland

Others- T.Johnstone, L.Hayes, C.Bruce, J.Lewis, L Ball, C Mooney

Haven't seen a Vic side written up yet but i just threw this side together quickly. And im not 100% sure on a fews origins especially the highlighted ones (I think Riewoldts a tazzy????) but still a side similiar to this would defiantly give us SA boys a hiding i think. Anyone who missed or should be their loved to hear your thoughts. I Couldnt pick a decent ruckmen though it is very rough side i tried to pick it on current form more then anything. And what about Allies and the WA side how would they line up?

Riewoldt is a Queenslander. Lenny Hayes was recruited from ACT Rams.

Interesting that you mention Jordan Lewis. He is certainly in great form. I'd give Scotland a miss.

I'm a huge fan of the State of Origin concept but looking at the sides that would play i'd be happy to give it a miss for a while yet. The sides that have been suggested for SA on this thread are very ordinary and the Vic side that was suggested would absolutely smash us. What would a WA side look like? I imagine they would be fairly strong.

That's no reason not to have it, in fact that's the point of having it. The best players v best players ..... besides there are a few all-Australians in the SA line-up so I wouldn't write us off too soon. In the 80s half our side wasn't even playing in the VFL and yet we often won. Having a closer look at our side it's pretty strong IMO, line the players up position-for-position and it's pretty close. Rutten did a number on J Brown a few weeks ago for example. O'Loughlin, Burton, Ebert, Pavlich, Tredrea (if fit) is not far off the best forward line as SA has had IMO. Cornes and Rutten not a bad FB/CHB combo. Rutten all-Australian, Cornes a chance for the Brownlow arguably.

Heath Scotland is a very good player but i see what you mean he does dominate in a lower side. And i think that Jordan Lewis is a very under rated player he is in the top 5 for possesions in the league and goes very much under oppostion radars he is going to be a key player towards Hawthorns rise in years to come. Maybe put jimmy there on the flank he is the red hot peformer at the moment.
