Trading Players / Pre Season Draft

Postby Blue Boy » Thu May 31, 2007 2:16 pm

Since Neil Craig has been senior coach I have been getting more and more frustrated by my Crows not seeming to be active in trade week and luring players to the club through the pre season draft.

2006 not active at all ???
2005 the only one was Ferguss Watts - mind you that was a walk out !!!
2004 Tyson Stenglein wanted to go home so we got Scott Thompson through him wanting to come home !!!

Players could of been traded last year for draft picks and we didnt even do that !!!

Besides clubs not wanting to trade with us just because they dont want to - why do we not seem to be active in the last few years.

Does the coach think that science will get us through no matter the player ???
It is what it is !!!

Port Adelaide were very keen to get Thompson and the Crows pipped them at the post

Look at the draft picks of the Crows under Craig's coaching who have already played ... Van Berlo, Knights, Maric, Douglas, Vince, Porplyzia

IMO ... forget trading for used players, focus on getting your drafting right and pick juniors to get in to your system as early as possible. Most clubs have realised this.

Look also at rookie list pick-ups Crows have snagged : Rutten, Bock, Griffin

Which players would you have traded Blue-Boy?

Tyson Stenglien wanting to go home - clinched that deal for us no doubt.

I am not frustrated with the drafting / rookies at all - dont forget Mattner in that rookie list group.

Last Year possible outs for trade - Skipworth - worth a draft pick and a club was willing to do that / Meesen - some clubs may have given something good for him / Jericho - worth a young player who a club was willing to give up.

Out of the traded players who went to other clubs for me Tarrant would of been a maybe - Freo basically gave up Medhurst for him. So in essence he wanted out of Collingwood or vice versa.
It is what it is !!!

I left footy park last year after the prelim against the Weagles gutted !!!

Then we didnt make our side better to have a tilt this year - thats why I am frustrated.

Mate, I don't want to argue with a fellow Crows supporter! Hang in there - if we didn't have so many injuries late last season well, who knows?

That was a low day for me too ... I was on a plane so missed the 2nd half. Last I heard we were up at 1/2 time and then found out the bad news when I arrived in Adelaide.

There's natural improvement from Kinghts, Van Berlo & other juniors which does make the team 'better' to some extent. I don't think there were any glaringly obvious established players we could have traded for that would have done any better job than who we have out there. Tarrant obviously would have been handy but you have to give up an equivalent of Medhurst ... nothing comes for free. Plus he's 27 or whatever and has a history of going missing, not sure I'd even want him?

Ask Terry Wallace .....

NO credit? Not even a grudging "he's done sort-of OK"? :D

Nope,not Wallace,not Eade,not Craig.

Malthouse,yep,Mathews,Worsfold,Williams,Sheedy,Pagan,Roos,yep.yep,yep and yep.

It is the prize all coaches require on their resume.Premiership.

Craig at Norwood and Adelaide? Nope.Top 4,as Blue Boy says, only hurts ,there is no joy at all.As years go by you think it will feel more like an achievment, but it just goes onto feel more like lost opportunity.

That's assuming the Crows don't do anything more than top 4 ....... time will tell, it took Williams 5 seasons, Worsfold 4-5, Malthouse 7, Sheedy 4, Pagan 4, Matthews 5 before they got their 1st premiership (roughly speaking). Craigy's in the 3rd full-time season. If you can' give an AFL coach ANY credit for 2 top 4 finishes in his first 2 seasons then you are a harder man then me.

Crows had the chance to draft Sav Rocca but didnt and ended up playing 100 games for the Roos...and what did the Crows lack during the Ayres era? a Full Forward

I doubt that the Sav would have really solved that problem, or improved the Gary Ayres gameplan problem.

101 games 234 goals after he was drafted...I think he would have helped

Would he have come to SA you think Dutchy? I remember thinking he wouldn't be a bad pick-up at the time.

Yeah but the Crows had a disease - call someone a full forward and they tried to direct every score through them. Better off unlearning that pattern.

If he was prepared to go to the US, SA would probably been an alternative for the right renumeration.
