Pickett AWOL

Postby Hondo » Tue May 15, 2007 6:19 pm

Heard on the radio today that Melbourne have suspended Byron Pickett for 1 week for ... wait for it .... failing to turn up to the game on Sunday

The report said that Pickett admitted to being out drinking the night before.

Um ... Byron you aren't playing Amatuer Leage here

to put the record straight, he was named as an emergency for last w/e game, but admited he got on the p@&s and didnt even turn up to watch. The leadership group have banned him to the VFL for 4 weeks. AND told him to reconsider his future with the Dee's

What could have been
I was an ordinary footballer
I played at school
I played Amatuer League
Byron is a gifted footballer, blessed with dazzling skills and inordinate ability.
He has obtained flags at 2 clubs[kangaroos ?] and played in successful teams

However when its all over he is going to look back at a career and think he had
all that ability and did not capitalise on it
I wish I had that ability, I would have utilised it a lot better than Byron

He showed in the Power premiership year what he was capable of with that
absolutely awesome game he played v Brisbane in theG/F
Pity he could not do it more often.

As for the :drinkers: :drinkers:  :drinkers: :drinkers: he can be forgiven
As for his greatest hits on some unsuspecting players [-X

Byron Drinkett seeya later

I dare say expect a retirement shortly....yes the Roos picked him up after the Power didnt pick him in their best 52 despite being at the maggies at the time....Roos swooped and he picked up the Rising Star and a premiership medal....I always felt Pagan got the most out of him as he was uncomprimising....Laidley, Williams & Danhier havent

You're probably right but fortunately for Williams he managed to get the best out of him on the day that counted in 2004.

Cousins has a drug problem and gets flown to the US for rehabilitation treatment, Pickett has an alcohol problem and gets suspended from the club and is told to go consider his future???

Alcohol is the number one most abused drug in Australia, so really what is the difference between getting wasted on an un-named drug in Cousins case and getting wasted on Alcohol in Picketts case, why isnt the club giving him the support that West Coast gave Cousins and getting him into rehab?

Is Pickett an alcoholic or is he just not 100% committed to footy at the moment? Is it an addiction or an attitude problem? If it's the latter then club is doing the right thing.

I recall hearing that he turned up to pre-season training out of shape.

Pickett should take whatever punishment he gets on the chin- his prior form in SA would have seen Joe Average locked up.
Also, Stiffy covered for him in one as well... *allegedly*
(disclaimer- the word allegedly is entered under sufferance...)

Apparently the Roo's were scouting Scott Freeborn at the time and they went away from the U19 match wanting to know who the young player was on him that cut him to shreds!
