PORT ADELAIDE has finally won the battle to dress to all of its 137-year history - in particular the proud black-and-white heritage the club had in the SANFL from 1902 to leaving for the AFL in 1997.

The AFL at 3pm today endorsed a compromise deal with the Power and Collingwood on the contentious issue of black-and-white guernseys.

The deal allows Port to wear its black and white prison-bar jumper in all heritage games at AAMI Stadium from next year unless it involves Collingwood.

As a one-off, the Power can wear the prison-bar jumper in heritage round this year - on July 7 when Port plays the Western Bulldogs at Telstra Dome.

Port has formally signed an agreement that it will never design a new jumper for AFL games that is predominantly black and white stripes that would clash with Collingwood.

"We're pleased that we have an agreement that allows us to recognise our black-and-white history in heritage matches at AAMI Stadium - even when we are the away team to Adelaide in Showdowns," said Power chief executive John James.

Port has only once worn its prison-bar jumper in the AFL - in the first heritage round in 2003 when the Power played Carlton at AAMi Stadium.

I thought Port Adelaide MAgpies were still around but acticle says otherwise.

You can bet that the next couple of years the heritage games for Port will be away....

I hate Port, and when i say that i really mean it BUT the one thing that i side with them on is this issue. They absolutely should be able to wear the prison bar guernsey as much as they like. Fair enough against Collingwood they should need another design but otherwise they should be able to wear it. It's harder to hate a club when they look as ridiculous week in week out as Port do in whatever teal monstrosity they decide on for each particular game.

There shouldn't be any restrictions but, given the Eddie factor, it's a good compromise

Port need to keep fighting, McGuire might think that he runs the AFL, yet Port have every right to have thier full heritage and not what the president of Collingwood thinks is appropriate.

Considering how many times Port have finished over Collingwood, I think that when it comes down to it Port are clearly the better and more successful team overall. Maybe that is why Collingwood dont want to see them wear that guernsey.

Why dont they wear the guernsey they wore on their first AFL game in the 90s
This is the Port Power football club a decade old in the AFL
This is not Port Magpies, the real balck + white team of the SANFL

What rubbish.
They entered the AFL knowing there was already a side with Black & White stripes- they accepted that & designed a jumper with teal (& silver to come), & that is their colours in the AFL.
I agree they should be able to wear the prison bar jumper in the 80's heritage round (depsite double-dipping with history), as long as they are not playing Collingwood, but that is all.

Pfft. There's two teams that wear Navy and White as well. As for double dipping with history, what about the Pies (Britannia) orginal colours of Red, White and Blue. Cripes...the Bulldogs run the AFL. Stop picking on Collingwood and let them wear their beloved original colours LOL. As long as there isn't a clash WGAF.

Collingwood give me the sh**ts about this issue for many reasons - one was shown on Saturday when they played Carlton. Their new mostly black guernsey now clashes with more teams than their old one. And still they refuse to budge.

And don't get me started on the red sponsors logo they are happy to add to their beloved black & white.

We shouldn't let our hatred of Port Adelaide (those of us that hate them) cloud the real issue here.

What's the "double dipping" with history?

It's all a bit stupid really. Firstly Collingwood not budging on the black and white stripes and wanting to protect their guernsey. FFS, Port don't want to wear a Collingwood guernsey and no one wants to change Collingwood's guernsey so what's the big deal.

And then Port Power supporters crying out for their heritage at a game where they wore an 11 year old's design from a colouring in competition. Perhaps if Port didn't try and get away from their SANFL club image as much as possible when they first entered it might be easier for them to argue their point now.

Again, Port have taken the easy quick fix option to satisfy Collingwood and try to shut their old supporters up for a little while. It would appear to me the Port Adelaide Football Club see their future in competing with the Crows as the 2nd South Australian team as opposed to being the real Port Adelaide which everyone use to either love or hate.

I don't know about others on here, but I neither love or hate Port Power. Sometimes I don't mind watching them on the tv and seeing them do well. I have even been to a few of their games since they entered the AFL. But it's not people like me who will keep the club afloat. I'll never buy a membership. I'll never buy merchandise. I'll never cheer "Port Power".

I still can't stand the Port Magpies. Perhaps that gives an indication of who the real Port Adelaide is.

Oh it gets better... at the request of Collingwood, there will be no mass production of Port's B&W heritage jumper.

So now fans will be cheated out of having a replica of their own. I was quite looking forward to bagging one for my collection.

I know they were after a black and white Port Magpies guernsey hence my referral and Im sure if you gave some of the people wearing teal at Magpies games a couple of bucks they'd part with some of the Power rubbish they wear.

I saw Michaelangelo Rucci today at a cafe wearing a black and white tracky top with "1870" embroided on the back....what a tosser!

it will make it so much easier to hate the power if they are wearing the magpies kit. hooray.
