Having a Beer at Football Park

Postby Sojourner » Sat May 12, 2007 9:28 pm

I am trying to figure out specifically why you cant load up with beers and take them down to your seat at Football Park like we do at the Cricket at Adelaide Oval?

Lets be blunt, which gets someone p*ssed faster, Port in a Thermos flask or a plastic cup full of beer? Strange how many people bring those Thermos flasks into Football Park and seem to sip their "coffee" rather slowly from the cup!

Considering how long it takes to get cut on midstrength beer and how long it takes you to walk them back to your seat and the time that the game goes for, I think that the whole banning idea is somewhat of a nonsense!

Footy Park

Is the fact that there are so many season ticket holders with a fixed seat part of the reasoning for the ban????At a Crows game I would imagine you just cant find another seat if you draw the pissy loudmouth you have got him/her for the whole season and too bad if you have kids I suppose. I guess that could be a long season.Dont get me wrong I love my ales as much as anyone but am prepared to go to a seperate area to drink.
We got 5 day tickets to the test match at Adelaide Oval in the Chappell stands and had each day basically spoilt by 5 guys in the row bringing grog to the seats and spilling it all over everyone on the way through nearly every bloody time .By the time it got to 2pm they were embarrasing to themselves and the poor buggers in the row in front were covered in the stuff .Throw in a trip down to the loo each every 40 min (naturally in the middle of an over) it was a continual procession of coming through ..coming through .Beers stored under seats forgotten about and accidently kicked over only to run down 4-5 rows in front through everyones bags and stuff .It was not that enjoyable at $65.00 dollars a seat for the right.
From that day on I support the no beer in the seats at Footy Park.At the SANFL I guess people can move away if your group is getting pissy(apologies in arrears and advance for my own behavior maybe )But after my own experience my view has changed and I support the ban at Footy park.I guess at the MCG and Telstra Dome (and for sure at the old Waverly ground)most of the areas are"general admission " where you can move around a bit but as stated before to be fixed to a seat with 2 young kids and have a slob mob next to you I do sympathize with.

It's pathetic. I go every week to the G and Telstra Doom and have never seen any problem.

Drinking and aggression at sporting events was why my wife wouldn't go to Oakbank more than once and half a game at Prospect Oval when we lived in Prospect was more than enough for her. She's a historian, muso, and dancer, and not into aggro.

I only ever went to Oakbank once (circa 1984) and saw Stephen Kernahan staggering aroung the Balhannah pub at 9 in the morning totally maggotted. Not too many racing fans at Oakbank - a reason to avoid.

Footy is only a two hour game, you shouldn't have time to get truly cut. Of course, Prospect has its own culture. :P Much more genteel atmosphere at Pecker Park.

My wife used to go to the occasional Norwood practice match with me and found that comfortable enough. She used to live near Unley Oval before we got together.

People that cant hold their grog and act like bogans as a result at the Cricket can quite easily be shown the door if the security are alerted! Rather than put up with it, simply notify a staff member and have them thrown out!

I've worked in the members bar for 12 years, I get more people asking why we dont serve everything in glasses ( i tell them we dont trust the Port supporters with glass  ) as opposed to why we cant take drinks back to seats (a question that usuallyonly comes from interstate members..and understandably)

its always been the accepted thing and I really dont think there are too many people that have ever really had a problem with it. You're there to watch the footy FFS!!! There are a lot of blokes i dont see until half time at any given game, but are happy to stay and watch the 2nd half of the game in the foyer and have a few beers.. i guess its a matter of whatever floats your boat...

The SANFL reported a while back (not too long though) words to the effect of "This is the preferred option of our members" ... In my group of mates about 12 of us are members of AAMI lol and none of us have ever been asked if we'd like alcohol allowed back to seats!

And FC, I think you'll find most people are happy to hang around the foyer or Audi for a beer just because they're used to the fact that they can't have a beer anywhere else.

Personally it doesn't faze me too much, but I can't see any reason why AAMI Stadium should be any different to other major stadiums in the country.

i know youre happy to sit in the crows bar so you can have a ciggy too...

but you're right, its what people are used too, i personally think it would be too much of a head**** to carry drinks back to your seat anyway, especially at a crows game, there isnt as much room to move like there is at the G. People WILL cry over spilt milk (or beer if u will)

Many still manage to write themselves off by sitting in the bar all day. That I dont understand,go to Footy Park and just sit in the bar all day.

I'll admit,I have done it before, but only when playing Glenelg in a GF.Didnt matter if I saw the game,I knew who was going to win.

We had Footy Park membership right up till 2000.
It took us 9 years to realise we were going to the games, parking miles away from the ground, drinking warm beer at inflated prices whilst watching the game on TV and thought WTF are we spending $700 per year doing this?
Ive been to one AFL game there since.

I've never actually bought a beer at a sporting event - I've gone to see the sport not slake my thirst. I do remember having the odd one before batting then bowling in a social cricket match though. Run out at 25, and 3 wickets - 2 lawyers and an accountant! The accountant was the highest scorer in the match.
