Hawthorn and Western Bulldogs had 790 possessions between them - beating the 789 between Essendon and Adelaide in Round 10 1993.

Counting possessions in the AFL these days is absolutely meaningless with most sides now employing the 20 sideways to 1 forwards-play keepings off tactics. They'll have to start employing even more statisticians soon. I think the most relevant stat these days is "ball carriage'- how far you moved the ball FORWARD by hand/foot or carriage and inside fifties. How many of the 790 possesions were sideways chip passes in the backlines?

Watch NFL if you want those stats

I actually find it funny, that members on this forum have taken a swipe at the Adel / Freo game, in particularly Adelaide, but their has been no mention of WB and Hawks game which was vitually a game of netball, very few contests, just a game of keepy off's really

I will take a low scoring game full of one on one contest every time over a game that has no countability and few contests

Do we really thing the WB style of play can win them a premiership, let's just say a depleted crows side showed the Bullies that their style may be good enough against the lower sides but they will fall well short come Sept

In my stats the bullies are really truggling int heir midfield and defence...they are a great attacking team but their work when the opposition have the ball is non existant...will really need to be worked on if they want a Top 4 spot

Mark stats are probably the most useless these days. Teams rarely take a dozen contested marks anymore. S. Loewe would have had that on his own.

That stat says to me that all teams are: flooding, kicking backwards, keeping possession, rotating players through interchange, using few fixed positions, having 14 "midfielders", avoiding kicking to contests, putting players behind the ball.

There are also things they are doing differently for sure - but I don't think there is a huge difference between the teams we think are "attacking" and those we think are "defensive".

West Coast set a team possessions record last week, now the Bulldogs and Hawthorn set a games possession record ...

Eagleton is a good example of your point, I don't believe he has ever stood next to an opposition player

S/DOG 2 things are gunna happen soon

POINT 1
Adelaide will miss the finals next year and the crowds will deplore this defensive crapp
By virtue of the fact that they are winning now is disguising any anguish

POINT 2
When the AFL wakes up and restricts the amount of Interchanges sides with a lack
of leg speed will be exposed.
Sydney will be 1/2 the team
Adelaide will a 1/3 of the team
Kangas and the Hawks will struggle slightly
And West Coast will win the next 3 flags as no one can keep up with them.

Craig knows his limitations with his aging slow team and plays that style
If they play offensively they will be out runned by the quicker teams and struggle

I like SK/AC/PP in that order when barracking
But Im going to barrack for PP secondly now as Im fed up watching Craigs crapp.
They are not Croweaters they are Crobots

I posted a thread last year about there being 780 possessions in the Round 2 match between Port and Central. Macca19 said that it was good tough football and not keepings off (and you probably saw it too), which means you can have a high possession game and still be a proper game of football.

Of course, that can only happen in the SANFL.

Amazing that it has taken 14 years for that stat to be beaten - flooding, keepies offies, over possesed footy has been around for at least 14 years :o

A record Yes, however they still scored over 200 points, had higher than average Inside 50's for both teams and higher than average scoring shots...probably says a fair bit about the defence of both these sides

Your point 1 - who knows
Your point 2 - won't happen making the rest of your comments an unlikely hypothetical

My point - Crows leading goal kickers from LY:

1 Ricciuto 44 - injured, no games in 2007
2 Hentschel 42 - injured, no games in 2007
3 Burton 41 - playing
4 Bode 32 - injured, 1 game in 2007
5 McGregor 21 - recovering from injury, no games in 2007
6 Biglands 20 - injured, no games in 2007

Do you think the second highest scoring and one of the most attacking teams from 2006 has suddenly gone "defensive" just at a whim of Neil Craig? Or do you think there is some chance this is not a long-term game plan change but, instead, maybe Craigy dealing with a (hopefully) short term injury problem? Secondly, the Crows have yet to play Melbourne, Richmond, Brisbane, Carlton, Hawthorn, Kangaroos & Collingwood all teams predicted by most not to make the 8 this year.

Hentschel & Biglands - cant count them as you knew 8 months ago you wouldnt have them all year and decided to keep them on the list rather than replacing them.

McGregor travelled to Perth and still couldnt get a game with late drop outs, like late last year when wasnt in the best 22. Bode wasnt in the best 22 in Game 1 v Essendon.

So Roo is your only first choice player you are due to get back this season

I watched the game Syd and actually found it thoroughly enjoyable ... Don't take the stats in isolation, the game was played at a great speed and there were plenty of hard contests, particularly by the Hawks who I reckon have plenty to work with .. Good pace and physicality and I thought they actually weren't far off winning the game on Sunday.

I'd rate that game as more enjoyable to watch than the Crows Freo game, but I'd put much of it down to the better conditions in Melbourne than Perth on Sunday.

You would have let Hentschel & Biglands go would you?

5 of last year's top 6 goal scorers are missing - doesn't matter what spin you try to put on it.

I noticed you avoided my other points .... that mean you agree?

They have been playing this style of footy for about 2 years now
I watch them every week
If they had thier best 22 available they would still play like that

They play this way to compensate a lack of pace and because the main playmakers are aging

as discussed late last year I would have considered delisting them both for 2007, reloading the list with a couple of players they feel might give them extra flexability, and then redraft them in 2008...rather than run 2 short for the season
