I'm surprised about Richmond's figures. They did fairly well for most of the year...could it be that Tigers fans actually go to the games?

Well Richmond does have the 3rd or 4th highest membership...

Their early season form had EVERYONE on the bandwagon, but they rarely win a game after June so that's where the drop-off occurs.

Are Collingwood big crowd pullers or just big pullers?

Easy to get the TV Audiences when you're given prime airplay with Friday Night or Saturday Night games...

Richmond get screwed up the rear, and given they finished than both Collingwood AND Essendon in 2005, no changes to the fixturing which still has Pies and Bombers getting the BIG games.

Fugg that shits me. :x

Is it so hard* to believe that Collingwood pull a big crowd, despite their lack of on-field success? They are one of the richest clubs, their set up off the field is second to none, their supporter base is easily in the top 3, it makes sense that the AFL make a commercial decision. Who said friday nights are prime time? The amount of fri night footy i've seen over the years is virtually zero, so how is that a "huge advantage"? I'm sure if Collingwood were given games at 3 am on a Wed morning, and it rated, people would complain about the "unfair" advantage. Really, this whole debate has long been a non-event. Same for ANZAC day games- you play Melbournes 2 biggest crowd pullers, of course your going to get a sell out. Do you think for one minute that a Crows v Power game is going to have the same level of excitement? You'd probably have a bigger crowd at the Broadmeadows dog track on a mon night....

Looking at those figures, they really have no correlation at all to how popular a team is.

All you can infer from them is how much exposure each team got over the season - and obviously those teams which made the finals, and had more prime-time TV games got more exposure.

It shows though that making a Grand Final may really have a big impact on a club's membership and supporter base - roughly twice as many people will watch you, compared with if you didn't make the finals.

Interestingly late in the season channel 10 here in Melbourne chose to show Adelaide vs Port Adelaide on free to air, and pass on the Carlton vs Collingwood game. Due to the teams places on the ladder at the time no one outside of Carlton or Collingwood complained. I find in Melbourne that if someones team isn't playing they just want to see a good game.
