Talk on the national game

anzac day medal...still a disgrace

Postby bayman » Tue Apr 24, 2007 7:36 pm

how only players from 2 of the 16 clubs can win it is beyond me, anzac is AUSTRALIAN (new zealand as well) from a national war effort not from a 'civil war' between essendon & collingwood from 90 years ago, it is outrageous that money is the be all & end all & that is why they play, i think the sanfl have the right idea you EARN IT by being the previous years grand finalists

SHAME SHAME SHAME on this issue to in particularly the afl as they do the programing

if west coast played sydney in melbourne on wednesday i'd think they'd still fill up the stadium
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

I'm not fussed with it....they started a tradition that no-one else was doing, good luck to them.
They should not have exclusive rights to the day though, I mean if they want to play another ANZAC day game say in Adelaide or Perth etc then that should be okay.

Spot on as always Bayman, But when r the AFL in the buissness of making sensible and Rational Decisions.
To Save Money, they could combine with the ICC Bcos they r as both as useless as each other with the overseeing of their respective codes.

full marks to Essendon & Collingwood

Postby redden whites » Tue Apr 24, 2007 11:11 pm

I give full credit Ess and Coll for the Anzac day "tradition" of recent years.Always being played so early means they both get a home gate against the other big crowd team in each season.Guaranteed TV coverage for your home match sponsors with no competition.Full house MCG experience for all players.Masssive corpoate sales on alternate years. Very clever decision by both clubs. If the game was forced on a club (eg. last years premiers) especially if from interstate there would be nothing but complaints about travelling with a 2-3-4 day break and playing against a Melbourne team potentially. Also which teams members if both from interstate would have to sacrifice it's home game???

As for the medal well whats its called is meaningless .If it was called the Bob Smith medal would it be such a big deal?
It has no more meaning that other ridiculous ones like "Showdown" or "Ross Glendining". The name ANZAC is rightly treasured in this great country .I see the medal as named because it is played on the day and of no more significance than that.

they tried this a couple of years ago with a game in adelaide and 1 in sydney IIRC and both of them failed to draw a crowd combined to what attende the MCG. When the idea was first mooted these 2 clubs where the only ones to put their hand up. So i will go to the G today and enjoy one of the few traditions that the AFL has left.

If youve ever been to this fixture you would soon find out that this day is all about honouring the ANZACS.

Other AFL clubs could set up an Anzac Day match easily - as mentioned in a previous post, other games have been played on Anzac Day in the past.

The question of all these clubs that are 'keen' to play an Anzac Day game, why haven't they taken the initiative and organised to play one? With Anzac Day being on a Wednesday this year, it's a little too hard for them today me thinks, so how much does the idea really mean to them????

BTW - I agree with MW too ;)

Bayman

We need to be mindful that with the AFL, both Essendon and Collingwood were largely responsible for the ANZAC day match, both clubs got off their ass to initiate and promote the concept, while other clubs steered away from the concept

Yes players would love to be involved playing in an ANZAC day match, but most coaches would admit they rather not play on ANZAC day if it falls mid week like this year, it is just so difficult to manage player welfare

In saying that, I still think their is opportunity for Essendon and Collingwood to continue their ANZAC tradition which they largely created and for a second match to be played in the evening, maybe the previous G/Finalists

well not totally correct, this Anzac day match tradition is only about ten years old, and only alive because both clubs initiated and promoted the concept, previously the other clubs did not want to know about it, surely both clubs should be rewarded and allowed to benefit from this

10 years is long enough for a tradition to develop isn't it?

On another note - I can see room for the Anzac Day medal to be renamed.
Maybe it should be named after some veterans from Collingwood and Essendon. There'd be a few wouldn't there?

good luck on the bombers and the pies for building up ANZAC DAY for the blockbuster it has become.

as mentioned they did the hard yards when no-one else would, so why should they give up what they started to other clubs who are trying to jump on the bandwagon.

i said 90 years sarcastically !! & i dont think 10 years is a tradition obviously now they have it, it'll be a tradition in another 30 years or so but i still think it is wrong that 2 clubs play on anzac day, why do they have a god given right above anyone else ??

money should not be a god given right

Bayman, I've just found out that it's 12 years.
So are you going to tell clubs like Adelaide, Port and Freo, who have been around for [i]about[i] that length of time that they have no tradition?

absolutely, they have a short history & no 'real' tradition as yet, as it is time & efforts that build tradition (excluding port)

although adel, freo, wce could be called franchises, where the rest are clubs
