It is still very early days at this stage, yet at the end of last year, Cats president Frank Costa had to fight tooth and nail to keep coach Bomber Thompson for another year at Geelong, as a result rumours abounded that both Costa and Thompson would be getting the sack together at the end of this season.

Where are their detractors now?

When a club is really struggling it is interesting to note that it is usually the coaches head that is called for by the supporters, assistant coaching and recruiting staff dont face anything like the same pressure. Maybe a clubs problems can be solved by retaining the coach when the club is struggling. Hopefully Frank Costa will be proved right and Bomber Thompson will become a good example of my theory!

Dunno, Im a Cats fan and always had faith in Bomber and even more so in Costa.
Similar to the SANFL a lot of rumblings you hear at times are just fans of other clubs trying to make trouble.

do a ST KILDA and have a couple of bad years and get the best draft picks but actually try and do something rather then St Kilda who just make up the numbers

Both the cats and saints have been making up the numbers for 40 years....FFS..... Failure is tradition at these clubs.....

We've beaten no one and if we lose to Hawthorn the detractors will crawl back out from under their rocks. Welcome to football media 2007. Lose one game and it's crisis, lose two and the coach is gone. There are so many media outlets that simply reporting on what happens on the field is no longer considered sufficient. They have to come up with 'an angle'. Personally I thought Bomber was dead lucky to survive and I wouldn't have been too unhappy had he gone but the whole place was a disaster area last season and could yet still be one this year.

They had a bloke kick over 1000 goals even though he didn't play his entire career at full forward
Highest ever score in the league
Most points scored in a season

Of course we have had the ultimate success for a long time but to suggest we are just making up the numbers is ignorance of the highest order.

As much as these two might stick together,it will be the 'undoing' of them both at the same time.You would expect anything less than a Prelim appearance in September could be lethal to their career.

The faithful at the Cattery have been patient to say the least with Bomber and you would think last seasons end of season review would have been critical and set some fair targets for him.

That's been the Cats problem over the years of the AFL, unlike most other Victorian club they've never come bottom or near enough to it to get the crucial draft picks (and not even close to the extra one's for winning 5 games or less).

Yes i do. Much more benefit from finishing 16th than finishing second. At the end of the day i want to win and if that doesn't happen then you've lost. There's only 1 winner and in the AFL 15 losers each year.

It's easy to say if you don't win the GF you're not fussed if you come 2nd or 16th. But when you get in the argument at the pub, I'd rather be defending my team that came 2nd against the guy who finished last.

On the subject of needing to finish close to the bottom to get the early draft picks necessary to win a GF down the track, here are Sydney's ladder placings at the end of the minor round (couldn't quickly find the final placings but you get my drift - damn AFL Stats page) in the 9 seasons leading up to their 2005 premiership.

I'd be interested in seeing their placings in the leadup to 1996 when they finished 1st.
Also probably better comparing teams on a similar foothold ie clubs that haven't received extra salary cap $$$ like Sydney have in the past.

I'd say pre-1996 would be reasonably ordinary from memory but that doesn't help my argument

I am assuming that most of the current team come from drafts since then - but not all would have, granted.

REB, if you don't win you may as well come last.

If you come last then you are making up the numbers. Geelong has never finished lower than 12th. In the old days we couldn't compete with the richer clubs and in the new era we continually finish mid table with no bottom feeding or AFL handouts required in a state where there are TEN AFL clubs. We haven't won anything for a long time that's true (no cat fan needs to be reminded of that because everyone else does that for us) but we were four games away from an era. Also, to win the flag you need to be in a position to win one, at 16th you aren't in a position to win one, even with the draft picks as this takes time.
