Big Red Capt's Blues - Gibbs in 11 man leadership team

Postby sydney-dog » Wed Feb 21, 2007 9:52 pm

Hasn't times changed

Carlton has named a 11 man leadership group, this means it is possible that every second player in a selected side, is part of the leadership group

the leadership team is

Lance Whitnall - Captain
Brendan Fevola
Brad Fisher
Bryce Gibbs
Marc Murphy
Kade Simpson
Heath Scotland
Nick Stevens
Bret Thornton
Jarrad Waite
Simon Wiggins

I'm interested in Members views

1. Is 11 members over the top, does it devalue the honor and responsibilities

2. Players like Murphy and Gibbs are obviously future leaders of the club, but do they need to be part of a leadership group to develop in to a future leadership role

My views, 11 members is over the top, in specific to Murphy and Gibbs, this places so much pressure on them early in there careers, maybe the clun should of provided them leadership mentoring and coaching outside of the leadership group and allow them to focus on establishing themselves as AFL footballers first

ALL THE BEST TO THE TWO BOYS

I think Carlton is a different animal and they need to try something different to change the club around...They have done well with Glenelg boys over the years...

I think Carlton have pulled a blue. Half the team in the leadership group? What would you be thinking if you weren't in the leadership group? Doesn't Gibbs have enough pressure on him already?

Geelong tried this several years ago and fell flat on their ar5e and I expect Carlton to do much the same.

Looks to me like they have spread the leadership 'load' to a cross section of the team - young, old, ,fast, slow... They are all in there.

It means everyone is represented and that could be a good thing.

But I hope they have **** up.

Selecting Gibbs who is yet to play a senior game is absolute madness, but obviously reflective of where this club is at.

11 in the leadership group, and I'm not one of them?

Ask yourself that question.

I think that Gibbs and Murphy are part of the group to give the new recruites a voice in the committe. If younger players have feelings they need expressed they can now go through Gibbs and Murphy who as part of the group can express these feelings without causing friction.

I acutally think that this is a great move and as a Carlton fan im glad to see the club trying new things beacuase obviously what we have been doing the last 5 or so years hasn't worked.

The whole idea of a "Leadership Group" is a big wank if you ask me. Have a captain and vice-captain and be done with it. The other guys can all contribute. Why do you need these buzz words and bullsh*t?

Well how else are these leadership "gurus" going to justify their consultancy fees to the clubs....

they need to have some sort of psuedo impact???
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Interesting "leadership" group. A first year player (Gibbs), three players (including the captain) who made the headlines for public misdemeanours in the pre-season, and a player (Brett Thornton) who threatened to join the Hawks if the Blues didn't offer him a better contract. Great stuff Blues, that's real leadership quality. I think the reason they've named 11 in the group is to keep an eye on each other, a bit like Alcoholics Anonymous :)
