Good on Goodwin and the club for releasing a statement

Obviously Goody has breached the AFL rules, but I expect a fine only

If simon had made bets against the crows then that's a major issue, but given he only made bets on non crows games, I am really not sure what the issue is, as a player has no influence on the outcome of a game his is not playing in, surely this practice went on for years.

Simon, next time get your Mum to put the bet on for you

Really dont think Goodwin had any choice on releasing the statement Syd !!!

The club would be on the front foot with this.

I reckon it's gonna damage any aspirations of Simon Goodwin succeeding Mark Ricciuto as the next Crows Skipper though!

I was laughing my arse off when I heard this then heard Hale was involved also

Fair dinkum how dumb are these blokes???? Get a mate to open a account and bet for you...its not that hard

Syd Dog - Disagree that its OK because they didnt bet on their games, other players involved are obvoously sharing info betweent themselves about match ups etc, if that sort of stuff is getting spread to these blokes for betting purposes it aint good enough

When I heard 4 footballers were betting on footy I thought, "so what?" Then I heard Simon Goodwin was one of those players and I still thought, "so what?". My assumption was that the 4 players were all from the same club and probably running some sort of betting syndicate within their club. Sounded innocent enough, especially since we could all be confident a lot more than 4 AFL would be betting on footy.

Then I heard the 4 players were from different clubs, and it got me thinking. Thoughts of a huge betting ring involving players from all 16 clubs crossed my mind, and the implications this may have. Suddenly my thoughts about this are not so flippant.

Jockeys are not allowed to bet on horse racing because of the conflicts of interest that may occur, so I think footballers should be banned from betting on footy games. How you pokice it, I'm not sure. As people have said, it is easy to get a mate to place the bets for you.

What concerns me most of all is if the player runs himself into a huge debt and is then suddenly obligated to his debtor. Then the player is offered a "get out" bet by laying down in a big match, etc. I've said it many times, money ruins everything. It has certainly ruined football, and the more money that enters the game, the bigger the problems we will have.

Don't get caught up in the hysteria- my mail is that in goodwins case it was only on 4 games (one of which was the grand Final) and that he didn't put the bets on- a mate that shares account made bets- 1 was made on a different game while he was playing!! Lets not go for betting scandal, and crucify the bloke!

well its been reported that the bets where put on from their betting accounts, how else would they get found out??? Dumbarses

My assumptions would be that Goodwin and Ward would be havng the big bets (widely known) while the other 2 just seem to be small dumbarses that have had a couple of small bets on games for interest.

I was just trying to put it all in context

I accept the AFL has a policy to drive the bigger risk which is match fixing, in these four cases my understanding is none of the players waged bets on there clubs matches, in Kieren Jack's case he made two $5 bets, total of $10.00

For years players at clubs have been making bets to top up the end of season trip funds and we have never had an issue with match fixing

I am asking the question, have we gone to extreme with the laws to mitigate the risk of match fixing, or should players be allowed to bet on matches other then there club games, surely this is black and white where the conflict of interest lies

Yea all four players breached the policy, they will be fined, but lets put it in context

You missed my point SD...

EG
If Goodwin knows Riccuito (who has keicked 20 goals in last 4 games), in Craig's game plan for this weeks game, will be playing in defence as they believe they have a match up that will work for them...he rings Ward who is in Brisbane playing the Lions, Ward logs onto his Betfair account and LAYS Riccuito to kick the most goals for $1000-....Riccuito plays in defence and doesnt kick a goal, Ward collects on this info and slings Goodwin a share of the profit....

Surely this example is the same as betting against yourself or your game?

Mate, I agree, if you read my earlier posts, it is a CLEAR "NO GO", for a player to bet on or especially against their club, we need to ensure that players do not bet on games involving there clubs, but I fail to see the issue if Hale is betting on a showdown game, or if Goody Backed the Eagles on GF day.

This investigation will turn out to be a storm in a tea cup, maybe the rules should be relaxed a little so players can enjoy a punt on a game not involving there club

Whilst I think the bets are innocent enough at this stage, I also think the penalties should be quite substantial because we really don't want any form of betting by any players in the AFL. The risks which could happen to the game are too much and it needs to be stamped out now. Who knows what greed can eventuate to.

Everyone agrees that you have to have a blanket ban because it cuts out all the what ifs etc- my point is this is not some massive scandal as people are playing it out to be. The sunday mail article today comparing this to other sports rorts Grobbelar, Cronje etc is disgraceful. This is minor level- blokes being dumb- probably at the time not even thinking about the rules

$20 bucks says he'll get a fined (along with Ward)....whilst Hale and Jimmy Jack's son will get off.......

Mal, Punky, Ecky, Dutchy et al you got the odds on that.....

I think most people know this happens all the time - there are plenty of players who bet on games that they don't play in or they bet on their team to do well, which I don't think is that bad.

I know of a group of players had a significant bet on a game in 2005 (backed their team to win by 40+ @ $8 and they won by 15 goals) - I say good on them for having the courage to do it and make a good profit.

my mail is that Riccutio and two other crows players are also involved.
