For the first half of last season, the Geelong Cats seemed to be making progress, yet as the season came to a close it all seemed to fall in a screaming heap.

Over summer rumours were rife about the proposed sacking of their coach Mark Thompson, it was suggested that CEO Frank Costa had stood up for Mark Thompson and in a way put his neck out for him. Thompson lived to stay on as a result of Costa's support.

Fast forward to this season, will Geelong be in a position to make the 8?

I would like to think so, yet I think that they will just miss out this year and if that proves to be the case, Mark Thompson will likely fall on his sword.

Geelong's advantage over some sides in the AFL is Kardina Park and having a distinct home ground advantage. I feel that this gives them something extra which may help them over the line in a few of the closer contests keeping them in touch with the 8.

They do have some exciting young players, Gary Ablett Junior will hopefully give people something to see this year, yet that is a similar story for many AFL clubs. I think that it is about handling pressure from outside and I think that this is where Geelong may stumble somewhat.

As a Geelong supporter since the mid 80s I can safely say I have no f***ing idea.

I must admit it does feel that way at times!

Geelong's last Premiership - 1963, Souths last Premiership 1964, so not just the colours and emblems in common!

Still, you could do worse, The Western Bulldogs havent had their dicks wet since 1954!

Depends if the play finals in July!!! I think theys will be higherup ladder than my teAM, Brissie. They could be between 10th to 8th.

Fear is a wonderful motivator and I think there is a significant portion of Geelongs list that knows that if they don't perform as individuals or as a club that they will be out on their ear next year. So if they don't want to lose their six figure contracts and go out and have to earn a real living, I expect to see Geelong in eight this year

I believe they are certainties to make the eight too much talent in that list not to be in the top eight. Not sure if they are a top 4 side but they definately should be in the eight....

The word here in victoria is that for the first time in years many of their players are doing a full pre-season not a modified one becuase of injuries and post-season surgical clean outs.....King, Wojinski, Ottens etc, so they should be right to go from rd 1.....

Geelong will be one of 13 clubs making up the numbers while West Coast, Sydney and Adelaide fight it out.

read with interest that the Cats have cut short Johnson penalty and welcome him back to full training. Johnson will be available for selection in round 1

given the Cats lack of leadership in recent years, how should we view this decision, o one hand, it is a show of faith, but on the other, given the history, should the cats stay firm on the initial decision

I'll go right out on a limb and make a bold prediction here ... if Geelong can win as many or more games and/or have a healthier percentage than 8 other teams, then I think they can make the 8.

There are a lot of premierships droughts over the border:

Bulldogs last flag - 1954 (53 years)
Geelong last flag - 1963 (44 years)
Melbourne last flag - 1964 (43 years)
St Kilda last flag - 1966 (41 years)
Richmond last flag - 1980 (27 years)

Of the other teams in Melbourne , not quite in drought but ....
Hawthorn - no flags or Grand Final appearances since 1991 (16 years)
Collingwood - 1 since 1958 (1 in 49 years)
Carlton - no flags since 1995 (12 years)
Essendon and Kangaroos - not in drought

Some more interesting stats:
Since the 1995 Grand Final, of the 22 Grand Finalists, only 9 have been Victorian (remember 10 of the 16 clubs are Victorian)
Only 4 all Victorian team Grand Finals since 1990 (1993, 1995, 1999 and 2000)
No Victorian team in Grand Final since Collingwood in 2003
Since 1990, only 6 premierships (out of 16) won by Victorian teams, 4 of those from the 4 all-Victorian matches. Other 10 won by Brisbane (3), West Coast (3), Adelaide (2), Sydney (1), Power (1)
