AFL at Adelaide Oval

This subject has been discussed alot on 5AA but has gone a little quiet, so I am wondering what your opinion is?

I favor the idea, I think that having a couple of AFL games a year at Adelaide Oval could be done really well and be quite popular. If Geelong played West Coast at Adelaide Oval on a friday night I think that could be a sell out without to many problems. With the new grandstand going in, the capacity will be raised and as SANFL fans know, it already is a great venue to watch footy at.

Public Transport would work well and the Cafes in North Adelaide would likely do a roaring trade, I suppose the opposition would be that if the Crows or Power was on the same weekend that it may cause people to choose the Adelaide Oval game over the other one, yet Crows games nearly always are a sell out and Power crowds are fairly consistant, so I dont think it really is that much of an issue. Maybe Football Park just are not keen on the competition?

You think so????

Like a team from the NT this debate will pop up every so often but it will not happen

The SANFL have a $100 Million plus investment at Footy Pk and have an "agreement" with the AFL that the only place AFL footy will be played in Adelaide is footy Pk.

The only places the AFL want victorian based teams to play home games "away" are the developing markets, NSW, QLD, NT and Tassie. I believe they also have a rule that the maximum amount of games any one club can play at a venue is 12, so only for teh interstate teams they can only have one away game played at home i.e. the Port Power Showdown home game for Adelaide Footy Club.

This rule was brought up when Brisbane tried to get more away "home" games at the Gabba, when tehy were cashed up and winning.....

As a SACA member I know I will never see an AFL at Adelaide oval.

SANFL footy at Footy Park (not counting finals) lacks atmosphere. It almost a sterile environment. Adelaide Oval for me any time.

Remember, Footy park was only built because the SACA was unreasonable in negotiation thinking they had the upper hand at that time. Rejected shared tennancy is one that sticks in mind.

Now the SANFL has invested in Footy Park and it brings in $$$ which go to the stake holders eg SANFL clubs - why would SANFL clubs want to share the golden goose with SACA - hope never happens

I cant see why either Geelong, West Coast or any other club would look at Adelaide Oval as a place to play a match during the regular season. The only reason clubs play home games away from their home is for cash and to search for new members. They got no chance of that in Adelaide.

The idea of Adelaide Oval being used for AFL is good in theory, but in practice it breaks down.

I must have dreamt that I went to 3 weeks of SANFL finals at Adelaide oval this year, maybe North didn't loose the prelim. after all, it was just a nightmare.

Unless in the future the SA demand for AFL continues to grow and a struggling Melbourne based team relocates/merges.
20 years ago not many of us could predict the football landscape that exists today
Norwood Demons perhaps ?

The Redlegs were gunning for a shot at the AFL... Not that long ago either!
But I can't see them merge with the Demons (Not while Ron Barassi's still alive!)
& the Melbourne Cricket Club would be totally opposed!
Plus there's Joe Gutnik who would sooner eat a Bacon Double Cheeseburger than let that happen!

& now they are a financial basket-case (atm)
Centrals/North/South would have to be 1st in the running, for this fictional race for the 3rd SA AFL license...

Completely agree with you. Adelaide Oval is the best place to watch footy in SA.
