Pre-season draft

A couple of questions:

1) When is it held?

2) Why does it even exist? Why can't all the eligible/nominated players be included in the "regular" draft? Why do clubs have to 'pass' during the regular draft, saving room for the pre-season draft, when it could all just be done at the same time. I know there must be a reason, but what is it?

the theory is it gives tme for clubs to re-access their needs after the NAB draft, clubs get the opportunity to invite out of contract players to train before making a final decision

the pre-season draft is held on the same day as the rookie draft, not all clubs we have a pre-season selection, for example Adelaide used all it's selections today so they will now be focused on the rookie draft

The rookie draft is when I expect SANFL clubs to be hit hard - hope Adelaide & Port only grab local kids so they are available in the SANFL.

Surely it wouldn't matter who Ad and PA grab as rookies? The important point from a SANFL point of view is that interstate clubs don't grab our local lads. Or am I (still) confused?

Also, what date is the pre-season draft?

it matters a fair bit

their has been enormous success with the rookie draft, we have seen players such as Kirk, Cox, Rutten, Davey all come from the rookie draft

sydney-dog, yes, I agree about that, what I was meaning was that from a "Hope we keep our SANFL talent in Adelaide" perspective, Adelaide and PA can rookie-list anyone, and it wouldn't affect who of our local lads could still play in the SANFL.

I am simply suggesting that every SA kid picked up by Adelaide/Port as rookie stays in the SANFL -- SA kids rookied interstate obviously lost to SANFL

traditionally Clubs like the Kanga's and WB have struggled to be able to finance all four rookie selections, so when they do select rookies they chose them from their own state as they do not have to pay for the relocation costs

Syd

Relocation not a factor at all - straight up cash is the problem in this area !!!

If any one really wanted to play in the AFL they would move any where - it is the base salary that kills them !!!

Would absolutely love it if someone would post the date of the pre-season draft...

I heard an interview with Eade last year and he mentioned that the club could only afford one position on the rookie list and it had to be a local kid as the club could only afford the wages but no other costs such as relocation

obviously wages are the biggest cost, but those clubs with lower operation budgets also find it difficult to be able to meet relocation costs

Oldfella, I really appreciate that information. Yes, I had found it very hard to locate too (well, actually I couldn't find it at all). Thanks, mate.

As part of the bold new strategic plan announced by the AFL earlier in the year, all clubs will be forced to carry at least 4 rookies (they've received increases in funding to allow them to do it). Good news for SA kids (or at least that small minority of them who eventually get to play senior AFL footy); bad news for SA clubs.

The historical trend of clubs to draft rookies predominantly from their own state is now, sadly, over. Melbourne clubs are wise to the fact that they were creating a massive disadvantage for themselves by squabbling over tiny slices of the Victorian pie. Jason Roe, Luke McEntee, Jace Bode and Ed Lower were all taken by interstate clubs last year before Port or Adelaide even had their first pick.
