Carlton says Gibbs will be a Blueblood

CARLTON has told Bryce Gibbs it will take him in the national draft with its No. 1 pick later this month and is preparing to offer the young South Australian superstar a long-term deal of three to four years.
The Blues flew their No. 1 pick from last year's draft, Marc Murphy, to Adelaide last week to meet Gibbs and his family and encourage the teenager regarding Carlton's future prospects and to communicate the enthusiasm of the playing group towards Gibbs.
Murphy, who resumed official training yesterday with most of his teammates, was accompanied by Carlton recruiter Wayne Hughes, director Stephen Kernahan and chief executive Michael Malouf.
Not only did the Blues officials tell Gibbs he would be their first choice in the draft, they also signalled their intention to put forward a deal of at least three years — as they did with Murphy last year — in a bid to retain the talented youngster for as long as possible.
Gibbs was the subject of much controversy over the season, given his father's long and impressive pedigree in the SANFL — a record that the Crows believed tied him to their club under the father-son rule.
However, Gibbs, who has long been tipped as a No. 1 draft pick, missed qualifying for the Crows under the father-son rule by the slimmest of margins — a shortfall pointed out to the AFL by the Crows' hometown rival Port Adelaide.
Adelaide's recruiting chief James Fantasia fuelled the controversy surrounding Gibbs last September when he issued a warning to any club considering drafting the player that Gibbs would return to Adelaide after two years.
The AFL promptly wrote to Fantasia and, in turn, warned him over draft-tampering.
Gibbs, 17, finished third in SANFL club Glenelg's best and fairest this season and, with the highly rated West Australian ruckman Matthew Leuenberger, was seen as one of the two most likely Carlton targets. However, the recent signing of big former Saint Cain Ackland to boost Carlton's ruck stocks appears to have sealed Gibbs' immediate future.
