Balme to the Cats

As reported today, after 8 years service Balme has quit the Pies and has accepted a similar role at the Cats

there seems to be a growing focus on these Football Operations Manager positions, myself I find it difficult to quantify their actual value and impact to the oranisation

The coach and his assistants job descriptions and responsibilities are clear, the recruiting mangers job task is crystal clear, but I have always failed to see the value of the Football Operations Manager position

Notice I made no mention of 'failure' whilst in his time at the 'Legs? Balme was most successful at Norwood, and yes smart arse,it is.But in saying that,88,89,90,92,94,95,96,98 have gone some way to making up for it..

ROFL Touche' my good man ... Think you will find Balmey played in a couple of premierships at Richmond ... Did quite well coaching the Dee's (considering how tough a gig that has proven to be) and their team of 94' rates as one of the better to not make it to the big dance imho (bundled out by WC @ Subiaco in Prelim).

The single worst game I ever have witnessed was the Power V Dees right at the end of Balmes tenure as he was trying to limit the damage on the field and save his arse off it.They, and I think Balmey should get the credit/flack for it,employed the sideways, backwards possession game in wet windy conditions at Footy Park against a side on the rise,Balme,as I said trying to limit the damage. It was apalling, and I think it may have spelled the end for him.

I get the feeling that Balmey's downfall may well come from the same quality that endears him to most, in that he is perceived as being "One of the lads" ... Generally results in positive starts at clubs, but those above grow a little tired of it eventually.

He's a great character though and I hope he performs well in his role with the Catters (even if just for REB's sake)!

I wish I was as big a failure as Neil Balme. Premierships at Tigerland and Norwood and some juicy jobs throughout middle age. Seeing as I am not that sure what his position does (despite G Dubya's excellent information), I don't have too much of a feeling one way or the other regarding Balme. The other bloke Davidson was a bit of a worry so you can't knock the club for getting someone with some external (look that up in your dictionary Power supporters) experience.

As long as we don't win the bloody NAB cup next season, I am confident the Cats can climb back into the eight.

regards,

REB

REB is strangely AWOL - would like his views.

My old man is a staunch Legs man and was heavily involved in the club in the eighties and despite some success he never rated him...I tend to agree, he seems to stumble into roles and move quick enough to another before the axe comes...when you hear him interviewed he is just drab and boring, no great insight into his footy brain...dont think he is the right one for the cats given their tender position within the AFL atm....my opinion only, be interested in others

Yes REB, Peter Rohde, Geoff Morris, Phil Walsh, Dean Bailey, Brenton Sanderson (until you guys snaffled him), Tony McGuinness, and Mark Mickan all had fine playing careers with the PAFC :D

Fair enough Dutchy but I won't bag a new bloke with external experience when they join my footy club. FWIW, IMO Balme has someting to offer.

Its all being taken care of Mr REB :D

Of course the club wasn't going to overlook Primus for the ruck coaching role (although his Norwood and Geelong experience did count against him apparently :D), it was a common sense appointment. As for Adam Kingsley, the word around the club is that he has a magnificent football brain. I believe theres still one appointment to be made, it will be interesting to see if the club does look for an "outsider", they did try for Jonas but were outbid by the Crows, i'm sure they have tried for others from outside the club but haven't been able to snaffle them.

I actually heard that Sanderson only got the Geelong job because Austin McCrabb wasn't available. And umm, hasn't Hinkley been an assistant at the Cats?

We've got a premiership coach and several premiership players REB ;) you need to worry about your own backyard and a certain Mr Thompson ;)
