400 AFL games

Postby Booney » Mon Aug 05, 2024 3:57 pm

Bartlett did it in the 80's. Tuck did it in the 90's. Then Fletcher 2015, Harvey 2016, Burgoyne 2021, Pendlebury 2024.

Who, if any will get there and looking into it nobody will any time soon.

With 24 games + finals + nutrition + fitness + recovery Boak ( 365 ) might get there

Hawkins, Dangerfield, Goldstein, Sidebottom, Martin and Ward ( all 300 plus ) most certainly won't.

Breust, Darling both 295, Duncan 291, Parker 287, Touhy, Shiels 285, Gaff 278, Walker, 276, Zorko 270, Blicsavs, Neale 265, Smith 262, Gunston 255. None of them are going to get there and if they did Breust and Darling are 5 years away.

If Boak can get there then it'll be a long wait before anyone ever does and if he doesn't we may never see another one which is hard to believe given the amount of games played per year + nutrition + recovery + fitness.

Are we going to potentially see 5* in 11 years and no more?

Great question. I think although more games + fitter + nutrition, there is still a heavier toll on the bodies these days. Injuries seem to be longer also (nothing to back that up haha), and more precaution taken.

400 games is bloody tough, even Boak is still a long way off getting there.

Boak is a chance, his form and fitness, IMO, has him in line for a deal for next year and he's owned a wing this year. 365 + 3 more + a final gets him to 369.

20-24 next year and he's into the 390's all going well.

There's the crux of it though, all going well.

Steele Sidebottom is 33, could he get around for another 3-4 years?

Lachie Neale would have to be the only one with a chance out of the players you listed, Gaff might have been a chance if he didn't stab Brayshaw that day.

Aren't they having more games per season now?

265 for Neale now, 3 more + 3 finals this year = 271.

Means he's needing 130 more. 24 x 5 = 120.

He turns 32 in May next year so looking at being 37 / 38.

I think it will happen more often, especially if they reduce game time to 16 minute quarters.

reckon once they get 20 sides the rounds will reduce, if they play 16 min 1/4s you cant claim 400 games, you would have only played 200 :D

Yeah, highly unlikely but he's the best chance out of that lot, he did win the Brownlow last year and will finish in the top 3-5 this year so he'd have to have a dramatic loss of form to taper off any time soon, his fitness level is elite and you'd think he could pinch a season or two playing forward with the occasional stint in the centre.

Is Treloar a chance to at least get close? Played his 250th on the weekend and is 31.

Hard to know obviously but feel it might become slightly more common with all things like nutrition, recovery etc.

I guess it depends on what the AFL do with the game and how that impacts longevity. Will the game get quicker and quicker and what does that do for longevity, does it extend it if the flip side is less physicality, less tackles, less bumps. Potentially shorter quarters will have an impact, sub rule will have an impact. Will we get to a point where benches will be extended.

Zach Merrett could be a chance but only if Essendon play regular finals. He is 28yo and on 226 games, but has only played 4 finals. Pendlebury has played 31 finals, and of all the 400 gamers the least finals played is 23.

The modern members of the 400 club in Pendles, Boomer & Silk all have very good evasive and awareness skills, almost 360 awareness meaning all ll of them were/are very hard to tackle due to this but also allows them to find space easily, so my theory is this has helped their longevity as they have not been battering rams like the Dangerfield types.

Im sure we all have played with guys like this even at grassroots level, you would come off limping and sore and they would be find cause no one could lay a glove on them!

Could easily include KB in there as well, super quick and was responsible for the reinterpretation the holding the ball rule.

Tucky & Fletch the outliers, rangy types who just never really copped serious, long-term injury.
