Akermanis completes rapid-fire trade

Brisbane triple premiership player Jason Akermanis has been traded to the Western Bulldogs in the first key deal of AFL trade week.

In a remarkably quick trade to begin the annual player exchange period, Akermanis will join the Bulldogs after a much-publicised fall-out with the Lions.

Brisbane football manager Graeme Allan said the full details of the trade were still to be finalised but it would not involve any other players.

"We have agreed to trade Jason Akermanis to the Bulldogs," Allan said.

"We're still working out the details, there will be no (other) player involved in the trade and that's all we're saying at the moment."'

The agreement happened just minutes after trade week started but the normal trend of clubs is to finalise negotiations minutes before the deadline.
Western Bulldogs recruiting manager Scott Clayton said the two clubs had wanted to prevent days of media and public speculation.

"Everyone is pleased, we just thought we would get it out of the way so conjecture stops and we will move on," Clayton said.

"It's important and the club is happy and the coach is happy."

Akermanis, 29, was twice dropped by Brisbane this year for disciplinary reasons.

Brisbane obviously wanted to get rid of him big time.

Can't wait for the Brisbane vs Western Bulldogs game! Aker v Brown = ](*,)

More like 'the guy is a knob when we are losing but a champion when were kicking a55'. The Lions have dropped the ball big time. I for one was very happy to see Aker sitting in the stands when we played the Gorillas at the Gabriella recently.

I'm not sure that is the case. Akermanis was the Lions best and fairest in 2005 and we didn't make the finals. In 2006 he went from making provocative statements about the AFL in general, (such as comments on Wayne Carey) in previous years to comments about the club's coaching staff. The Lions have attempted in the past to advise him on what was acceptable and what wasn't, but in regards to the commenting on the club he clearly crossed the line on a number of occasions in 2006.

What should the Lions have done differently? Not allowed Akermanis in the media? Michael Voss, Alistair Lynch and Craig McRae all combined a media career when playing for the Lions and did that quite successfully and without causing angst. Why not Akermanis?

Regarding the Akermanis trade, it sounds like it hasn't been finalised. Apparently there is still discussion over the finer details, which I imagine is the draft picks that will go to the Lions, or possibly the amount of Akermanis' contract that will paid by each club in 2007. The Bulldogs will pay Akermanis' full salary in 2008 and 2009.

Fair enough Roy. It just appeared to this observer that the Lions didn't quite have the same level of tolerence re: Akker this season as in comparison to last.

I think the club was more tolerant in the past as it had a more mature list that could manage Aka's personality, now the list is very young I sense the club is worried about his impact on the younger group, but my opinion is, they should of muzzled AKA long time ago.......

In regards to the trade, it's refreshing to see the Aka trade done so early, my opinion, 5 days is too long, it allows clubs to play silly delay tactics for way too long, this is why so many trades are not finalised until the dying hours and in the past it has prevented some smaller trades from being finalised by the 2pm deadline

For Example, Hawks want a first round pick for Spida, so in the Hawks footy dept eyes they value him highly, well if they valued him this highly why didn't they offer him the two years he was seeking

definitely think the AFL should move to reduce the trade period to 3 days

Now I can definatly call AKA a DOG. I hope he gets nailed into the ground at the first bounce.
I loved him as a player but of late he has become a deadset knob.

Im not sure about this (and to be honest haven't had too deep a look into it), but why do we have a one week trade period, when some of the biggest comps/sports in the world (NBL, Soccer) have trade deadlines that cut off during the season proper?

Soccer has 2 - one before the season starts that goes for about 6 to 8 weeks and one mid seson that goes for about 4 weeks !!!
